Whats the deal on YOM tags in Florida? We have a house in KY and FL I'm thinking of registering my 62 wagon in Florida using YOM tags.
i had to send my yom tag the dmv to be check out and approved before i could use it on my 63 nova. but that was about 15 years ago. i am still using it on the car.
this is a good point for those watching at home. I believe it is still a requirement to this day, not 100% certain, but prety sure.
Has to go to Tallah***ee. Your local DMV can supply envelope, ect. Tally gives thumbs up or down. A DMV worker once told me if it was thumbs down they'd make a repro of it, I don't really believe that.
Yes, it has to go to Tallah***ee with the required information and for a vehicle made in that year. It must be original, not repainted or touched up, and in good shape. The Horseless Carriage tag is only good to attend shows, parades, and special events. From what I remember there are rules on the Blue Antique tag but nothing that can't be met with common sense. I really don't think it's legal to drive to work and back and grocery shopping with an Antique Tag. But an occasional trip to Wally World to buy oil or something is fine. After all, you can also be fueling up for the next event. Yes, bumpers are also required. We found that out with our 41 Ford. Just a friendly note that we needed them. So far, I've half way complied. Added an old 1948 Chevy truck bumper with a piece removed from the center on the rear. Still lookin for something to put on front. For the 31 A member, move to Illinois and I can sell you a nice 1931 Illinois plate that I removed from my old A years ago.
Thank you George, I thought I was correct, Some cities can be a real pain with the rear bumper issue. I once left a dealership with a new S-15 GMC shop truck- no rear bumper. No roll pan, no custom anything or modifications I just didn't pay extra for the rear bumper. I wasn't 5 miles from the dealer and got a citation! Talk about pissed.................
I remember several years ago, pre 70's, many people bought pick ups without a rear bumper and never put one on. Didn't even realize it was the law. We actually added our homemade 48 Chevy truck bumper after some kids in a Rice Burner rolled into our 41 Ford at a stop light at Daytona Turkey run. Kids actually came up and asked why my teen aged son backed into him! Amazingly his plastic bumper did no damage to the old Ford. Did make us start thinking what the Cop told us a few weeks earlier.
I have no direct experience with them but have talked to people who have gone the YOM route in Florida. They said it is sort of complicated. First of all, the plates have to be in good condition, but can't be restored yet, they have to be original and in good condition. You submit them to the State and they decided if they are suitable to be used. If they determine they are not good enough, they s**** them and you are SOL. If they are ok, you get them back and can then have them restored to like new conditon. That is what I have been told, if that is not correct I'm sorry for the misinformation. Don
You can run a YOM tag, I have done it. My friends do it as well, I have a cherry 31 tag for my coupe I plan to run. It's a very easy process here.
Question on the YOM. Do they put the sticker on or do you? Ive seen some with it in the center area and it looks like ****. Best reason why I havent sent my tag in yet. They dont destroy your tag if not approved.
i have YOM plates on my 34 and horseless carrige on 2 model a's. i asked at tag office about driving the HC plates anytime and the said i could drive anytime. used to be that they were restricted.
I have horseless carriage tag on my 29 roadster, and it has 47,000 miles on it. I have driven it all over the country, Bonneville, Texas, L.A. Tennessee, Key West . Never had a question about tag from law enforcement. You do not have to pay but once.
Don, mine YOM plate came back with the sticker already attached, it would be hard to "restore" it, plus my '55 plate looked new except for a small scratch across one number.
You have to wait untill renewal time, you get a new sticker like any other plate. Anybody know a good fast restorer?
Based on Y'alls input including stickers on YOM tags and needing to send the tag to Talah***ee, I'm going to leave my Kentucky YOM's on the wagon. In Kentucky all you have to do is bolt on the YOM's as long as the KY Historic tag is in the vehicle. The KY tag is a one time issue. If it ends in KY its got to be good!
I checked with DMV today and there is NO Flroida YOM regarding authenicating old plates. Send what ya got and if it is not altered, defigured, repainted or stolen, it can be registered for your vehicle, no matter what year.
The problem with YOM tags in Fl. is when you sell the car the tag has to go w/it or be destroyed. You cannot use it on another car unlike our other tags that move from car to car.
I've got regular Fl. plates on my '30 coupe (which they made me register as a 2 door). I got those plates to avoid any B.S. cause I drive it as much as I can.
They do the same thing here in Connecticut. see earl american plates on hondas ,all kinds of **** boxes

The big problem with street rod tag is this. They are now changing your ***le to whatever year your car is street rod. So if you had an original 32 ford that you hot rodded and put street rod plates on you no longer own a 32 ford in the states eye's . You own a 32 street rod. Ask me how I found out . I got two letter's last week informing me that two of my car's both ***led as 29 ford's are now 29 street rod's. For a measly 77.00$ they will even send me a new ***le sayin I have a 29 street rod. Gotta love the govt. Point is never get a street rod tag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gregg
Gman, Smart move. If you look at the overall cost of plates in FL they are bandits, along with insurance rates. I am in the same boat as you except it's TN and FL. My 2 antique vehicles are ***led and tagged in TN. One time fee, no yearly renewal requied. Just one of the reasons our place in FL is for sale.
