Find someone with an oil-drip furnace in their shop. Goodwill gesture.

I too have been wondering about old oil. I have a 5 gal can of Oilzum racing oil 50W never opened. I've asked around but never got a straight answer. It's from the 50's from a guy that used to race midgets.

The was some additives but none that suspended combustion byproduct. This is what we call cleaner/detergent oil today. Personally I would want the detergent oils of today that suspend crap for the oil filter to pick up than oils of yesterday year that allow combustion byproduct settle in the pan. I would use the oil for general purpose engines such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, snow throwers, etc. Or as one suggested, use it in a oil burning furnace.

If they look cool, chances are a collector of oil cans may want the barrels that the oil came in, so dont throw/give them away. Can you post a pic?

  5. I googled "Oil Recovery Companies" and this website came up...Don't know anything about them nor do I have any connection.. But, on their homepage they list.. "Virgin Fuel and Petroleum Product Recovery" services..Maybe they buy it... I'd at least call and ask them about it http://recycleoilco.com/httpdocs/index.htmt

All these answers make me think about the barrel of 600 weight oil that I have been saving. The only thing that I was told it was good for is early Ford transmitions.

It's to thick to go through a oil burner and it"s too thin to be used as road tar.
Now what do I do with it?

it is still good and has a real cash value ---run a local ad on it and see what happens---having it tested is good advice but your eyes and nose can tell you if it is bad

I have a 55 gallon barrell of Shell Tellus oil ive been using for a while...come to think of it, probably 20 years...seems to be fine.

  11. 600 weight oil? If I had that I would probably call guiness and shoot for a record.

  12. Having that much old oil on hand would justify investing in a shop heater that burns the stuff. That would probably be enough to heat my shop for the rest of my life. I save the old oil when I do oil changes, pour a pint or so over the kindling when I fire up the wood heater in the house. Gets the fire going quick and easy.

Get some vintage glass bottles, make some period looking labels to paste on them, sell your vintage "Snake Oil" for $20.00/quart. ;)

    Were they traditional midgets?
As for the oil, I might put it in the gas tank a quart at a time every fillup for top lube and disposal. Or just get a burner as stated before.

It just might be ok. I bought a few cases of old late 70s Valvoline racing oil with the higher zinc content for new engine start ups. No problems so far. If anything you could have it tested first.

  22. there is a company that does oil analysis called BLACKSTONE LABORATORIES the will test every fluid you can put in your car and tell you if its good or not. also they can tell you how often you should change your oil based on how broken down it is.. I think its like 20 bucks and they send you out the kit which has a small bottle you fill up and the container to put that into for sending.. really great guys

  23. Yep!

Rustproofing material or fuel for the oil furnace.

Take a sample down to your local petroleum wholesale co. and have him do a test to see if there has been any break down . As long as no moisture or contaminated material has mixed. It should be ok.
