Just thought I'd share with fellow hot rodders what I did for my Dad.

When my Dad found out how sick he really was, his only wishes were to not be left alone and not to bury him.

My ol'man was born in 1940. He stole his uncle's '36 Chrysler 2dr coupe at the age of 12, just for the joy ride. He was hooked on cars from there on. At 13 he got his first job at "Motores Tijuana", the local Chevy dealer, sweeping the shop. He moved up to detailing cars at 14, and was doing tune-ups at 15. Child labor laws are things we deal with now. In his time, it was a need to help feed his sisters and little brother. He was considered a master mechanic by the time he married my mom in '65. He loved cars, all cars. He would look through my magazines and reminisce about old times and cars he owned, or his buddies had at one time.

I had him around for almost 45 years. He taught me a lot about cars and doing things right. He told me about the 5 year rule in kustomizing, 5 years before or 5 years after.

When he passed, I was given the duty of finding an urn for him. Nothing quite expressed who he was. So I "kustomized" one. My ol'man was worth it, and I know we all have an "ol'man" we owe, for our hobby and life style we love so much.

It's a 1940 Ford. Seven lug nuts surrounding it represent his seven kids.

What a great way to remember your Dad. Sounds like he was a great guy. I still have my Pa, he is 91 and still rides his motorcycle.

  12. Mighty fine "Memorial Urn" for your Dad... Good way to remember him!

My Dad built his own urn although it was meant to be a "Bullet Proof Mailbox" for my house to keep the rambunctious kids from using our mailbox for batting practice.

That is a lot nicer than the 8 inch section of PVC that is taped to the roll bars in my race car. The tech guy asked what was the deal with the pvc and I told him Earl{a close friend} was in it and now he will not check anything on the pass side cockpit. Some times Earl rides on my motor cycle.. Thank You very much for your thread and photos....Your love shows.. Bobby..

That is great. Death is something I never thought about until recently. Just turned 74 this month. Now not a day goes by when I turn this computer on thinking this may be the last time.
We have four kids. The only "car guy" is the son we adopted which belonged to our second son. Long story. Now that we live in Florida and the other kids are still in Illinois, it's the "car guy" kid I get to work with on our projects.
My wife and I love the beaches, especially south of Daytona. I joke with my boy about putting my ashes in an old coffee can and driving fast down the beach with me in the back of our 55 Chevy wagon, windows and tailgate open wide.
Maybe he can buy or build a 39 Ford or 55 Chevy like you did and stick my ashes in there. Some of us live and die dreaming about old cars. What a way to go! You did a great thing for your dad and us other dads.
PS--I just took one of those silly polls about aging. I'm going to be here another 19 years so my son has plenty of time to start making my Urn.

Sorry about your dad but what a cool thing to do for him. I'm sure he has a smile on his face because of it.

Thanks, fellas. I appreciate the props, comments and condolences. This was more about what he did for me, than what I did for him. I'm glad you all picked up on that. But, it was also a reminder to fellow hot rodders, that the guys that started this movement of hot rodding, will all be a memory one day. If you're one of them, like my ol'man, thank you. And if the person that turned you on to rods is still around, stop by or give them a call sometime. Even if they are a little grumpy. XP

  28. Very nice urn and tribute for your father. He would be happy to be sitting under a 40 Ford in eternity.
