  2. It's not an Ansen, looks homemade to protect feet only.

Outside of the Honest Charlie adds in the old magazines or maybe an old catalog there is probably little info.

These days it is probably a lot better wall hanger and conversation piece than something you would trust to protect your feet from an exploding clutch.

I believe the intended purpose was to deflect the pieces of of a flywheel, clutch and or cast bellhousing downward instead of letting it come up through the floorboards.

It does look like the universal ****ter shield in their catalog. Not to be confused with a blow proof bellhousing that came along a little later. This is a 1961 Honest Charlie catalog. The first blow proof bellhousings were aluminum....very thick but 2 piece aluminum.

1963 (this is a 1963 Big Ed's Speed shop catalog) This one is a RC industries. I had one of these with the side motor mounts. The aluminum ones didn't stay around too long before they went to the heavy cast iron or steel type. I bought a used aluminum one that came with a cast iron/steel lower section. It wasn't made that way. It was a mish mash of parts. If I remember right the bolt holes for the 2 pieces didn't even line up right. I don't know when they went to the one piece stamped steel type.

  11. As I remember the cast 2 piece units had a high failure rate which is why NHRA pulled their certification. The Hydro formed bell housings made by Lakewood and others became the standard from the late 60's to today.

The cast ones? or the Aluminum ?

  13. I'm sure the 2 piece cast iron design was outlawed, but can't say about the aluminum version.

Anyone ever see the Honest Charlie ones installed or have one?? The straight across bracket is really confusing me on how these things actually got mounted.

Also the RC Wedge Ansen ones ,,are they Illegal Now in those old Nostalgia Drag cars ?

All of the early two piece ****tershields are illegal now, and are just nice to use in an early style rod for "the look".

The straight bottom piece had to be bent by the installer to clear the shallower bottom half. It didn't take a whole lot to clear at the bottom. Back then it was understood that hot rod parts don't fit:D...some adjusting was always required.

The one I had in 60 the brackets bolted to the frame and the curved piece went between the floor and the bell. It was for a chevy ina chevy and fit like a saddle on a sow. The flats went from the brackets to the curved piece and had to be cut to fit. Interfered with the clutch linkage. All it did was keep the junk out of the cab, kinda. I never had a clutch explosion but an other guy did. While it still did some body damage, most of the junk went out the bottom.

  22. I have one of the Ansen two piece cast steel bell housings in my 57 Safari. It was raced in the early 60's and was legal then. When I got the car the lower section was off and when I tried to bolt it back on,there were some issues with bolt holes aligning properly.Amazingly enough the original supertanium (grade 8+)bolts were in a box with some other pieces to the car.

Wasn't it Ansen who made cast steel(rather than iron) flywheel housings that included a flat steel reinforcement plate for the block?

    Yes.

Ansen, RC Industries, and Wedge Engineering. The Wedge Engineering ones were sold under M/T, Shelby, Dana Chevrolet, Cyclone, Ford, ect. Think Moon also sold RC made units???

Hearing the name, now I remember seeing either magazine adds or an article about the Wedge piece.

Those are the three MAKERS of cast steel ****tershields I have found. If anyone knows of another manufacturer (not re-badged units from one of the three above) lets hear about it. The sub-contracted Wedge Engineering units usually had "Wedge" cast into them, as well as "Dana" or "Cobra" in the case of the Shelby American units, not sure about M/T or Cyclone. As a side note, the original "Cobra" Wedge Engineering units apparently pull upwards of 2K!!! Little rich for my blood! Kennedy cast "Cobra" re-pops in the nineties, even the re-pops supposedly go for around a thou.
