I'm a roadster guy at heart and thought I could live with a coupe. I was wrong! The coupe just isn't as fun as a roadster. Someone wanted to buy the coupe at the Hoedown. I told the guy it wasn't for sale just yet. I want to have some fun with it first and I can't work on something for myself till I get the shop cleared out. It got me thinking about what I could build that would fill the need for a ******* car.

I know of a 33 cabrio that is an old hot rod. I think I could get the car for about $15000. The body is real nice, but the rest of the car is not how I would do it. I would want to unchannell it...no biggie. I'd redo most of the driveline but the parts that are there are usable. It's also got a 32 shell on it which I hate. Putting a 32 shell on a 33 is like putting a model A shell on a 32...just wrong! I'd run either a 33 grill...$$$$ or a 37 truck grill...I have one.

I'm just not sure a cabrio would look good in an early lakes style with numbers and such. What do you guys think???? I guess everything I build doesn't need numbers. I just like that look.

I'm thinking my other option would be to find a ratty 33/34 coupe and turn it into a roadster. I know it's sacred to cut the roof off of a coupe but a real roadster is outa my price range. It would take a lot of work, but I think I could make it look good. What's the differences in the 5 window and the roadster?? Are the doors about the same length? I'm guessing the interior would have to be shortened to look right. Anbody know of a body or pieces?

Larry...I'm not that crazy and it has been done. I think the car was a salt flats car converted to street use. I think it's red.

On a '34 the door opening on a 5 window is 30 inches, roadster is 28 3/4. I have a little dealer book I bought on Ebay tha has all the specs, measurements, colors etc. for a '34. If Zach will scan it, you can have a copy.

    Hi Clark

I'm not so sure either. 33/34 Fords where rarely seen on the lakes and a cabrio evene more sc****.

The 33 could be a nice Hot Rod but a cabrio isn't a lakes type race car. Depends on what you're after. The look of an old lakes car in the meaning of coulour/number theme, or the total feeling of an old lakes racer or dual purpose car.

I would have settled for a street car out of the 33, ( look at Montgomerys books for street cars of the 40's) or picked up a A/deuce project for the lakes car
    My opinion
    Let your heart decide.

You may ask klazurfer on here for some tips regarding converting a coupe into a roadster. I think he might have some experience/ideas.

    Good luck

Only you Clark, wouldn't be happy with that coupe! I think you're nuts.

But I know what you're saying. You want what you want. And those dreams and pictures in your head never give you a break.

The difference between you and me, though, is that you actually BUILD the cars you dream about, so I can't give you too much grief.

    ...you are nuts though...

Clark .. Why not just GO For it :) Buy the cabrio ( $15000.- doesnt seem unfair .. ),( Do not unchannel it ), and You could just combine the look of Jack Morgans Yellow roadster with the look of Murdock Paynes` 5windr , and that mix would look Waay cool ( IMHO ). Just give the windshield a good rake ..

How about turning the cabrio into a roadster? It's gotta be easier to cut off that windsheild than a whole roof !!!!! :)

I think there is a picture of a '33 cabriolet on the lakes in one of Montgomery's books, but I'm not sure. They don't look very good in the old timey style.IMHO.

True......33 and 34's were wider and not as good in the wind as a Model A.
    32's either.....

A old timer told me that if you were running 100 MPH at the flats with a 32 Hiboy Roadster ( V8 .... :) ) in the old days....and pulled the 32 off and put a 29 Model A Roadster on the same frame...nothing different but the body change...the Hiboy would pick up 5 MPH........due to less wind resistance.

I would suggest doing an A roadster. They are certianly more affordable.

Well even a ratted out coupe body will cost a small fortune. I saw an old hacked up dirt car 3 window shell with no floors, doors or trunk bring 5500.

CruZer :" How about turning the cabrio into a roadster? It's gotta be easier to cut off that windsheild than a whole roof ! " Well , Belive me on this :... That is NOT an option ... ( a LOT of pain/Work , and NO gain & a ruined cabrio-body )
A raked windshield & a`37 Truck-grille & some work by Clark will look WAAY COOL ...
Clark ... Go for it !!!!
BTW ... A 5W-to-Roadster conversion : A LOT of work if you want it to look like the real thing .....

The cabrio is just too nice to cut up. It's got a near perfect body besides the channel.

Pete...building the car is 90 percent of the fun for me. Besides I have an A coupster body in the shed.

Sixcarb...sorry! I know your pops has one, but it's just one of my pet peaves. You wouldn't put an A shell on a 32 .....would you??

I know I may have to spend some bucks for a ratty coupe but I really like 33/34 Fords. I just missed a coupe body that was just ruff enough on Ebay...went for $1200 I know I'm not gonna find another that cheap.

How about you bring it to Hershey invite all the AACA members over and we'll have a chopping seminar. We would have to keep portable defibulators on hand.
