I have a 49 Ford w/a shaved fuel door, so refueling is done by opening trunk to access filler neck.

Now my question; Is it safe to re-locate the battery to the trunk in this car?

My concern is of safety and gas fumes and a battery together in the trunk.

The fuel cap on the filler neck is nice and tight and I do not notice any smell of gas in the trunk now, and the battery would be mounted inside one of those plastic battery boxes on the opposite side of the trunk.

    Any advice is appreciated...

  2. Get an NHRA accepted sealed battery box. Moroso makes one that can be had for about 75-100 bucks.

  3. I have a something close to that and I feel safe.

make sure gas cap is non-vent style and run a vent tube from filler neck to outside of trunk.
run vent tube from battery box to outside of trunk too. better have a manual release for trunk latch, and not just an electric set up.

  5. Should do that anyway if you don't want the inside of you car to gass up.

The real problem happens during fueling.

X2 on the Moroso box. I have one in the race car and have seen several at the track over the years. Just be sure to vent it to the outside of the vehicle and you should be good to go.

I ran a battery in my trunk and a filler neck. I never had any fumes, and I wouuld put the battery of the passenger side if you can, but it really doesnt matter.

Don't have the fuel filler in the trunk but do have the battery there. Did see a battery blow up in a guys face once from ignited hydrogen fumes. Took a brushless 12 volt fan from a computer and mounted on top of the plastic battery box and vented it with piece of 2 inch hose, on with the ignition but only draws .25 amp.

You might consider an Optima battery they are jell filled and don't off much if any fumes.

I had it for several years in my 68 & the fumes still caused corrosion. I put it back in front on the fender well (stock location), before it caused any real damage.

Fuck, let it corrode the fender well, NOT the Trunk, NOT the Quater Panel.

i got a car with a battery in the trunk. I put it there when i was in high school, you know, for weight transfer or maybe it was the looks. Its such a pain in the ass sometimes. Its hard to get to and batterys are heavy, then you need long cables. Sure it doesnt spark just whenever but jump starting it is a pain in the ass. Or easy on the freeway. Im with MATA dont do it.

Just leave the battery in the engine compartment or find a way to put it in the pass. Compartment.
