Rich -- That is a little good news, hope in the next 3-4 months that something more perminate will take place, keep our fingers crossed. Trying to get all this trailer stuff done and will try to make the March Race. Mike -- Keep moving forward, would love to see the car there. Hard to make a living and build a race car in your spair time.
we are going to try to make the march race ... got almost all the big parts to get it done still looking for some light front wheels and a shifter
Mike & Rich -- If I can get this thing on a track during Feb and check out the changes I should be good to go for March 16. If not, it may be a back road test in a local orange grove. You will have it done, there is always a way. Keep us informed on build & race.
ok we are going back at it this week end . going to finish cage, build header and finish brake handle .... still looking for some odds and ends .... im in need of some help i have this intake and looking for a good carb to run we are going to go with one carb for now and later make a homemade intake and run more carbs... question is what carb do i look for if it dont fit i can always make a adaptor just looking for something that i know works well with my 225 slant motor is stock for now .....
Send a PM to ---- mudflap261 in Tulsa, Larry Jones, They will know I'm sure as they run a few nice slant 6 motors out that way. What is the center line measurements on the bolt pattern, sure looks like a small or big base Rochester 2G setup.
A Rochester 2G should work fine on a stock 225 motor, they flow about 190 cfm. Small base are a little hard to fine, but "Dashman" products makes an adapter for large base carb to small base intake.
Well all you guys have been putting in some long hours this past week. The car is really coming around. Nice cage you bent up, it looks good with the lower shoulder bar. I like were you located the steering support bar, wish my bar was forward a few inches so I could shorten the steering wheel shaft. Is you steering shaft that runs to the pitman arm splined and does it fit the original spline from the box? Where did you find the splined section? Nice to see the young guys working on this project, keep up the good work. I like the headers also, keeps them thinking. Great pictures, keep them coming.
its a peace of crome moly heavy wall no spline we going to drill and pin like yours just sitting there for the pic ... working on making it steer next .
I would encourage you to find a spline that fits the VW output shaft, weld it to the chrome moly tube, drill and tape a set screw with a lock nut to keep it from slideing. I have not been real happy with my pin setup as it is hard to get the grade 8 bolt and hole ID exactly the same. I had as much as 40 deg steering wheel play (20 deg each way) at one time, I worked to get the tolerance closer and have about 5-8 deg total as of now. If I redo mine I will use the method listed above. I think you can find the spline adapter on Ebay with some of the Sand/Dune Buggy Co. Just a suggestion, you may have a better idea, let me know.
work got rained out for us today so we got some time today to work on the car layed out floor and steering arm ...
(old28) we looked online and didnt see anything that would work but heres what we are thinking... if we drill a hole in the pipe and in the steering box then bolt it. then on the other sides drill and tap set srews.. think this would work ok ??? we have 13 more vw steering set ups if we mess this up
we will be running a stock slant 6 with a 904 three speed...29" tall tire what rear gear will we be needing ..we have a set of 2.72 a set of 3.08 and a set of 3.50 ... we will be going with a mini spool and was thinking of using the 350 or do we need to go 4.11-3.77
When I first ran my dragster it was very similar to the set up you will be starting with. Stock 225 slant 6, but with 2- 1 bbl carbs. 4 speed 833 OD trans, approx. 28" tire and a 3.70 rear end. I only made 5 or 6 runs ever. My best was 15.46 at 91.43 MPH. E.T. should have been at least a half second quicker if I could shift fast. Also had a small bog off the line. I didn't shift into 4th gear. Using Wallace Racing's calculator, (great site for drag racing calculations) my RPM at the finish line was 4,059. You can decide how tight you think your engine will rev. or what MPH you anticipate. I would guess you won't see much over 95 mph. I hope this helps. http://www.wallaceracing.com/Calculators.htm
I think your idea will work fine, for sure use a grade 8 bolt, and try to get a number/letter/fraction drill bit that is the a fraction larger than the bolt shank. I would also add another two piece collar to the inside of the chrome moly tube at the frame rail to stop the shaft from moving out. When I was setting my rear end up most recommended 3.77 gears. I will be going to 4.11 when I put my built 250 in as I want 6800-7200 in the lights. With that stock engine to start why don't you run the 3.50 gears you have, should work fine as starters.
(bobw) thanks we playing on that site now alot of fun playing with the numbers at one point i had the car running low 12s ....all joking aside im hoping the car will run in the 15s or so (old28) we are going to go with the 3.50 do some testing and tuning and see what happens "still praying we have a track to race at " p.s. not looking good but we pushing on
The 3.50 gears will work fine for test and tuning. Get the car on the track, fix all the little bugs that we all have and get some seat time. Then move on to phase two. I sure hope something can be worked out on both tracks, two major tracks in AZ in 6 months is not a good thing. Keep your heads up.
Mike, if nothing else, just looked at Tucsons' schedule and their reunion deal is May 17-18.Went last year and had alot of fun, may try to get some of the local inline guys together for that.
I should know about our schedule by the end of Wed. As soon as I know whats going on I'll post it here.Keep your fingers crossed!
picked up a carb and adaptor is on its way along with new front king pins .... mark welded scoop plate on the bottom to go from 4 barrel to a little two ... got most of the floor done ... also picked up the aluminum for the body
king pins be here on wednesday , carb adaptor be here friday , gasket kit for slant 6 be here in two weeks picked up aluminum for body so will start that soon also picked up some thin wall stainless 1 1/2 for coolant lines .... car is coming along
Can I make a suggestion Mike?In looking at the pic of the cage and floor I would run a diagnol up from the floor on each side of the seat area on the upright just in front of the seat mount, up to the upright by your shoulder for a lil more protection.
300racr the way I read the rule book it has to have a 3/4 .120 wall bars there. I used 1" because I had it. The car looks great. I am a bit behind you may have 1 of our done by april or may I hope.
