I'm starting to put together all of the parts for my pickup build. Right now I have a chopped 34 cab and all new Pete and Jakes 32 front end with disc brakes. I also have a rear coilover setup from them and I'm buying one of their new 32 frames. I'll be running a Chevy 350 crate engine that's been sitting in my shop with only 10k on it and an NV3500 trans. What rears will fit nicely under a 32 bed? I have a rear from a 48 F1 but I'm guessing it's probably too wide? I'm ok with either drum or disc brake rears.....disc would be nice as I'm going to daily drive it but not a necessity. What gear ratio would I want to go with the NV 3500 for normal everyday driving?
This is a photo of my old 33 with a 42-48 F-1 rear axle and a 26-27 pickup box. A 32 box will be wider. Uses stock 35 ford wheels and 7.00X16 tires.
I have a 57 Ford 9" rear end under my 34 pickup. It could actually be a little wider and still be ok.
I seen a program (somewhere) that will tell you what gear ratio you'll need IF you know: the rpm range you want to run, the final gear ratio of your tranny, the tire size you'll be running and the program will give you an approximate gear ratio of the rear end ----------- but i CAN'T FIND IT now.......... SORRY
My first 2 deuce PUs had 57 Ford Wagon rears and on the one I'm building now it's a 56 inch wide new 9 inch like I use on all my 28/34 chassis.
Nope, depends. 66 - 77 for the years. Came with big and small bearings; the off-road guys like the big bearing version. Around the NW the going rate for a complete axle is $300 - $600. Apart from the width, the bowl is centered, 5x5-1/2". Good for a hotrod but getting harder to find. Aaron
The ratio of POSI rear ends to non-POSI rear ends is about 1 to 1 ... or about half of the Broncos are POSI But it does not really matter because the Bronco is of the 9 inch Ford family and any 9 inch POSI will fit ( 28 spline to 28 spline or 31 to 31 ) I have never seen a 66- mid 70's Bronco rear with anything but 28 spline axles. Mine has a Strange Engineering Aluminum 9 inch center section in it. As far as the bearing goes ... most I have seen were small wheel bearing with 10 inch dia. brakes. The large bearing ones use 11 inch dia. Ford F-100 brake parts.
76-77 only have the big bearing and 11 inch brakes. most are 3.50 ratio. some 6cly had 4.10. i just put a 76 under my 34 pickup. if it matters to you the driveshaft isnt centered in a bronco rearend. out of center 3/4 inch
Alright guys I'll be starting all of my mock up in about 8 weeks on the truck so I am revisiting the rear end questions. I have looked into the Bronco rear a little bit more and it's definitely a viable option. Whatever rear I go with I'd like to have posi since the truck will be so light weight and hopefully decently powered. I'm assuming that knocks out using my F1 rear right? The tranny as of now is the NV3500 so obviously GM but of course I can go custom driveshaft. Would any sort of GM rear be the correct width for the 32 bed though? If I could keep the whole driveline GM it may make life a little easier....but not necessity. The front end is all new Pete and Jakes so I guess I want the rear to be close to the same width as that...I believe kingpin centers are 46". I also don't want the rear wheels to stick way out from the bed sides. Does anyone have exact width for a 32 bed minus the fenders?
I would suggest forgetting the F1 rear axle,,If you were using a flathead and early transmission or even a 5 speed the F1 might work but a later Ford axle would be better suited. HRP
I'm running a '74 Nova rear under my '33 PU. Width is fine, running '35 wires and 7.50 tires. I have about 3.5" of gap between the bed side and tire, by design.
Hey coming in a little late on this but I'm using a Ford 8" out of a Maverick. It fit perfectly with fenders on my '34.
No fenders on this one....sorry for the late reply I only have internet access on the weekends for the next few months.
I did some calling around this morning and found a guy about an hour and a half away with a stash of old Bronco rears. He's got a 3.50 rear with posi that he's asking $550 for. Is that roughly going rate? I'm in the northeast so things are a bit pricier up here than in the middle of the country. Also any idea on the value of my original 48 F1 rear if I want to sell it to defer the cost what is it worth?
Here's a GM 10 bolt posi, Firebird I think under my '34 PU. Not a traditional car Width inside backing plate to plate @52" outside width with 10" tires 74" I like the wider look on mine
Hey guys thanks for all the replies. I'm going to go with a guy about an hour and a half away from me who sells older Bronco parts. He is going to put together a Bronco rear with 3.50's and a posi for me in a couple weeks. Can't wait to start mocking up my chassis and get the cab on the frame in December when I have some time. I'll drop the small block and 5 speed in as well. Just need to decide on wheels and tires and get a bed.
I think you will be happy with the Bronco rear axle,,they are the right width and your able to keep the big bolt pattern. HRP
late to the party here, but I've got an early 80's (3 or 4) ranger 8.8 under mine. probably not the BEST option out there, but width is right and it was free. I agree with HRP you'll be happy with the bronco 9 inch.
