I acquired about 100 old starter drives, new old stock, but they have been sitting around so long they are rusty.

Anyone know of anything to soak them in that will remove the rust?

    Thanks

If they are rusty on the outside are they rusty on the inside? Soaking them in anything might cause issues with the clutch mechanisms inside.

I've used Evaporust many times with success. You can get it at Autozone for $25 a gallon. It will remove the rust, but I don't know what other effects it may have on your starter drives if you submerge the entire part. I generally dis***emble a part completely when letting it soak in Evaporust.

Muriatic acid, available at most hardware stores for about 6 bucks a gallon and a water flush neutralizes it, though you would have to grease/paint the parts pretty quick after they dry.

As mentioned before, I would dis***emble the part completely first and only clean the parts that need cleaning and each in the appropriate method.

  7. Ospho and a red pad will take your surface rust off quickly and convert what doesn't come off.
CLR wash & scrub will do it too.

I wouldn't soak them ***embled in anything.
If you want to take them apart there's plenty of stuff to soak them in.
    Oxalic acid
    Vinegar
    Mol***es
    Electrolysis

If it is only on the outside, products like Evaporust can be soaked into a rag and wrapped around the starter, just keep it wet

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm sure one of them or maybe all of them will work. If any one else has any ideas feel free to join in.

hi, one thing i use is simple green, it gets rid of all the greece and stuff that might be preventing the rust from being attacked by rust removers, then i use about 2 parts warm water 1 part muratic acid, that seems to kill off the rust pretty quick then just flush it with water and paint or greece it, hope u have luck

I tested the vinegar on a starter drive first, mainly because the wife had some in the house and it's cheap. Let it soak overnight. I makes the rust turn loose but does not remove it without some effort (wiping it down it was still stained). It easly cleaned up on a buffer wheel. Still quite a bt of effort when you have about a hundred to do. Went to Home Depoe and checked the label on Metal Rescue and found some stuff at Lowes that according to the ingredients is basically the same stuff. Metal Rescue is $25 a gallon and the stuff at Lowes is $4 a quart, about half price. Ok, I'm cheap, I'm also old.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will keep you posted here on the "Rusty Parts Thread".

  16. Watching too many tarnex commercials , (you know where they dip the nasty penny for 1 second and it comes out like new,) taints the reality of rust removal.

Update --------- Bought some of the stuff at Lowes called evap-o-rust. $4 a quart. While not as good as the Tarnex comercials on TV, it works damed good. After soaking for about 24 hours most of the starter drives just needed wiping down to look brand new again. A few "hard core" ones had to be lightly run on the buffer.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

If we were having a contest I guess this make you and steves29 the winners as they are basiclly the same product.

  21. Does that mean they get new starter drives shipped to their door?

Let me think about that ---------------probably not, but I do have a warm and fuzzy feeling about all the help you find here on the HAMB.

Of course that may also be from just spilling evaporust in my lap, excuse me a minute.

I use the muriatic acid full strength but after a quick rinse in water the parts go into a bath of water and baking soda to neutralize the acid. Some base/acid chemistry thing.
