So in my build thread on my A coupe build, I have a freshly rebuilt 283 with a nice set of Power Pack heads that is in line for this build. The car is not going to weigh much over 2000 pounds I figure and it will have a t-10 4 speed and 4.11 gears in the 9 inch. So with this in mind I have a couple questions for you. I am trying to stay with an early to mid 60's vibe, so I would like to use a similar vintage cam grind but am wondering what my limitations are. The engine has a forged crank and flat tops in it, and the heads are 60, 61 4 bbl or dual quad Vette, 60cc chambers. So question 1. I would like to not have to do the guide plate thing if possible so what will I be able to get away with as far as the numbers go? Secondly, what is a vintage perf grind (if any) that will fit the existing perameters of the stock components? Now I know that duration creates noise and that is a welcome feature, but, I am not in it for the poser sound. Just the best that I can achieve with mostly stock components for the day. Any info is much appreciated. Thank you, Hack
Try a 327-350 horse cam. It's hydralic and isn't real noisy, 440 lift, a slight lope. The 350 horse cam can use the old Z-28 single springs with no guide plates. You might also try to find a 327-375 horse cam, lots of lope, but its' a solid lift cam, not sure about dual springs with this cam. Crane, lunati and lots of cam grinders have cams that will fit the bill you are looking for. Speedy
The part # for the 350 / 327 cam is 3863151 . It's going to want some compression but with 60cc chambers that shouldn't be an issue.
Lunati makes a nice 327-350hp hydraulic cam. Comp Cams "Thumpr" series were designed to give that lumpy idle, they sound bigger than they are due to longer duration. Might be a good option, hydraulic as well.
As ALWAYS your best bet is to call the "TECH HELP" number for the various cam manufacturers and give them the data about your combination (gear ratio, tire size, carburation, weight of car, etc.) and let them advise you as to what cam to use. Tell them how you are going to use the car and what you expect out of it. Just be HONEST........your NOT going to run against John Force, your NOT going to Bonneville to set a record, and your NOT going to run 9 second E.T.'s on the street. Save all of that for after you've finished your 4th beer and your trying top your best buddy. I suggest Comp Cams as I've used them for over 20 years for engines I've built for street, drag, and oval track and they have never steered me wrong. Frank
Thanks for the info guys. And I will try calling the tech dudes on Monday. I did the Cam Quest thing and it suggested the Comp XE268s solid for the first choice. And the only reason I asked on the board is for real world experiences and maybe for any input on the guide plate necessity.
