I just purchased 2 " model A axles" from a salvage yard. I need a spring and need to know how to identify the axles to verify if they are model A and i need to know what size of spring they need. Any help would be great.
Any pictures of the axles, or at least some measurements? Perch boss height, kingpin to kingpin, and perch to perch dimensions would help. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
They are still in the back of my truck, i will post pics in the morning. And as for measurements, what and where do i measure. Im a bit new to this so this will sound dum but what part is the perch and perch boss?
model a axles are 2.25 thick 28-32 springs will work what part of illinois are you in, i have everything you would need tk
There is a pair of holes at the outside of the axles. Those are kingpin bosses. The pair of inboard holes are perch bosses. Measure height of perch boss top to bottom, and the other hole center to hole center dimensions. Model A axles and 37-48 axles have 2.25" perch bosses, while 32-36 axles are 2" perch boss height. Thanks alot carter, that helped alot. Hated to ask, ive been messing around with cars for along time but learning the lingo on the older ones has been a chore lol. tub in da dirt. I am in central il. sidell il little town south of danville il.
Went outside and measured where the wishbones hook to the axle ( perch bosses?), both axles measure 2.25. Are these a good find or are the 2.00" ones better. My goal is to build a vintage rod by keeping my parts 50s and older factory parts.
Look at this picture of various Ford axles. On the surface they look similar, but there are some distinctive differences between them, like the closeness of the spring perch holes to the kingpin, etc. You should be able to narrow it down to one of these: Don
Well that means they are either model a or 37-48. For a fenderless early Ford, the model a axle is better to use than the 37 and up axles. Measure from perch boss to perch boss and kingpin boss to kingpin boss. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
the ends look just like the 28-31. in the pic you posted. What size spring do the 28-31s use and is the a way to run a spring differant than stock to lower the front end or am i better off removing leafs from a stock spring?
28-32 springs are the same you can reverse the eye on the spring and remove a few leafs to get it lower tk
