So, ive searched and searched, i keep hearing of great off the shelf availability of parts for this 1951 Plymouth's 218 flat head, but i cant seem to find an off the shelf starter for it. the 6volt starter it came with, well has seen better days. the previous owner must have tried starting it with the cable just rest on it, as the bolt is fubar, and melted away. it will crank over, occaisionally. running an optima red top, has more then ample power, i can hear it trying but barely moves some times and kinda of chugs. ive dis***embled, and re***embled it, brushs look to be good, the springs are as well, nothing smells burnt..suggestions? seeing as its already ****ed, i soldered the starting wire to the post for now and thats how ive been trying it.

I dont think you are going to find a on the shelf starter for your car, look for a shop that rebuilds them or find a good used starter.

Your local auto electric rebuilder is your best bet, if they can't help, look up Andy Bernbaum chrysler parts or Vintage Power Wagons, they have tons of flathead parts.

if someone gave you a quote as to how much it would cost to rebuild a starter without seeing it and tearing it down, they are full of hot air in my opinion... unless they told you an amount MINUS parts and or machine work needed
