I have a 235 ci sitting in my 54 210. The engine runs. Has a small oil leak some where. Whats the best route to go when cleaning this engine?

The engine is fairly dry and I don't want to disassemble the engine at this time.

Whats the best method to clean up the engine without tearing it apart?

    Thanks

  2. I use the purple power and spray it on and rinse off with water. Make sure if you have some nice painted area not to spray on it it will doll it off. This stuff works good and removes the grease .

    Frenchy

  3. power washer and a spray can of engine cleaner. If it is really cruddy and caked scrape it off first.

I use Gunk's Foamy Engine Brite, a brush and the garden hose. Careful though since it smells pretty strong. Don't want to alarm your neighbors. I clean my stuff at night.

Or, you can hit up a coin-op carwash that has an "engine degreaser" setting and cleaning wand.

oven cleaner and water pressure= quick clean up.

  7. Get a catch pan under it and scrape it. Make scrapers that fit if you have to. Hack saw blades make great small area scrapers.
Clean catch pan and start with a brush and some solvent. You can use kerosene or diesel fuel, any degreaser purple power simple green , brake cleaner etc.
Clean catch pan and spray it down with dollar store oven cleaner, work it in with a brush and spray it again let it is sit and follow the directions on the can. Hose it off.

Should go without saying but safety glasses, gloves and no open holes on engine

I've always warmed the engine up first, not firecracker hot, just warm. Cover the dist. & carb with a baggy. GUNK the hell outta it. Let work for 15 min or so. Brush & re-GUNK heavy spots. Hit it with a pressure washer. Start engine and heat dry. Repeat if needed. Carful with the pressure around electical, alt, gen, etc.

Thanks for the reply. There isn't a ton of oil and gunk. But a lot of peeling engine paint.

Yep about any spray on let it soak wash it off engine cleaner works. I've been using Oil Eater with pretty good results.

Take along a can of WD-40 and a roll of paper towels and a screw driver to remove the distributor cap in case it draws moisture and the car won't start after you wash it. You might have to remove the cap spray it with WD to get the moisture out.

Scraping some of the heavy stuff off before you go helps too. I've even carried bare heads and blocks to the car wash to clean them before putting them together.

My parents '65 Impala broke an oil pressure gauge line. I replaced the plastic line with copper, then took it to a truck shop and had the engine compartment steamed cleaned. For my '32 Ford, I bought a portable steam cleaner. I used "Simple Green" and a soft brush to protect the paint. In hard to get areas, I used the steam cleaner.
