Hi , I'm putting power brakes in this 48 panel , (same as Dodge pickup ) I have a Ford 9 inch rear , but original everything in the front , everything works good , but right front wheel cylinder is starting to weep again, Bottom line , I want to put disc on the front . Have any of you swapped out hubs and rotors on the original 48 Dodge spindles ?? and , if so , what fits ? I can build the caliper backing plate , that is not the problem, I just want to find a bearing , hub combo to fit the original spindle .. P.S. The power of the truck is dynoed @ 333 , SBC 700R4 with Corvette shuttles , springs , elec. byp***,, etc. , and 3.50 rear gears . SO, no problem going from 0 to 90 , BUT, going 90 to 0 needs attention , Thanx in advance for your suggestions
I'm normally a "do everything yourself" kind of guy but when it came to the brakes I had no problem shelling out the money for a Rusty Hope kit... http://rustyhope.com/mopardiscbrakes.html It uses the stock spindles, and when you order them it comes with a list of parts you need, it all seems pretty random but it all goes together. I have a small block chevy in my truck that isn't quite as hot as yours. I recommend just buying the kit, I don't want to tell you what to do but brakes are an area where the money is well spent. If you have any questions about the kit or installation, feel free to pm me
I already had the rusty hope info, thanx ,I appreciate that,, but, I am looking for retrofit info , what bearings will work with what hub, etc.? I've put the 70 Chevelle stuff on the 57 Chev , with a few years newer calipers , Works great , also used the 70s rotors and hubs on the 50 chevy truck front , with the ring spacer , and that works great , too? I have been buying defunct dealer parts stock for years , and have hundreds of wheel bearings , ( maybe thousands) And I am sure I probably have the parts to make this work , I was just wondering if anybody could let me know what they used , and shorten my measurement , and mock up, trial and error time , with a parts list of what they used , Thanx again for all your help . Joe
I believe all trucks 39 and up have 4 bolt or at least they should. I remember the rotors I used were 70s dodge aspen, the calipers were 80s gm. The inner wheel bearing is off a 90s f150 but I don't remember what the outer ones are... I did have to make a shim for the inner wheel bearings because they were a sloppy fit.
Well, I'm working on finishing my template for a disk brake adapter like yourpc48's tech. It uses the stock hub and bearings with explorer disk hats and calipers. Disks bolt on you just need the adapter plate. I'd be happy to send a copy of the template over to you when I'm certain that everything is a sure fit, but I'm not sure when it will be as I have a lot of coals in the fire now.
Pretty sure it is a 4 bolt spindle , I just went through it a few months back , and that sticks in my mind , The truck is in my COLD (really cold ) storage shop now , I put it aside for a bit , so my priority changed to another priority , which got behind a previous priority , so I'm off on another "rust hunt " to drop off a 52 F2 and trade for an OT Cougar , 500 miles , round trip , who knows what I'll find on the way. Got a two car trailer , and I like to leave a space open , just in case another piece of historic rust needs to hitch a ride, Thanx again for your help , Joe @406-591-9O9O
