I bought a new set in '72. They looked just like Drew's, they were NOT painted. It MAY have been a pickled finish for corrosion but was not paint.

Nickle finish T70R refin(goldtone) ribbon logo

Media blast no finish T70 (graytone) star logo

Original aged finish 200s daisy 15/8.5

It took me considerable time trying to mach the original gold tone finsh of my early 70's American 200s Daisy Mag and I felt nickel spray paint matched this the best and perfect for a low buck low tech approch but at the end of the day whatever American used is still a mystery to me... I dig all 5 spokes ....

Original finish. Thats a good one, they were NOT nickle plated, and they were NOT anodized.

They were also NOT painted. American did NOT use anything on them.

I can't believe how many people can't get that straight in their heads.

Original finish was and is rough textured as cast for the spokes and machined and polished for the lips.

    Thats all, nothing else.

The color that the rough textured aluminum took on came from natural factors and was NOT some finish applied.

The spokes were as-cast, the rims were machined (not polished.) There was no finish - no polish, no clearcoat, no paint, no anodizing - nothing but the usual whitish corrosion that shows up after a while!

It was somewhat common to paint the centers, especially the 4-bolt 'Libre' version used on various smaller cars and sometimes even open-wheel racers.

There've been later designs I think there was one that had a cast center on a chromed steel rim, and the current style that in 17in and 18in diameters is a two-piece wheel with the center welded into a formed aluminum rim like other current AR wheels e.g. the Torq-Thrust II and 427 etc. These wheels usually have a powdercoated center and a polished rim but sometimes the whole thing is polished...

What about a real light alodine treatment to the raw aluminum. That would give it a gold tint
