i have an early powerglide equiped 63 corvette roadster. i am missing the flex plate and torque converter. the catch is its an early car and had air cooled converter which i am trying to find any leads please email me candlert@hotmail.com
A friend of mine just bought a barn full of early Chevy parts (not real early 70's 80's mostly) and there was one there He may have s****ped it all ready,it was a ****** and convertor. If you want, I don't know if the s**** yard went through all the metal yet or not (26,000 lbs of small blocks 3 speeds etc) I am sure you can find something closer but if you want the name of the s**** yard is Bi County in Bayshore NY, tell them the load Jesus had.I am supposed to go up to Huntington tomorrow where the other stuff is, but with this pending blizzard I don't know if that's going to happen or not.I will see if it escaped the first load. A lot of 6 cyl used the air cooled convertors as well.
You are a long ways off but I will still keep an eye out here. I happen onto really old GM stuff here from time to time. You may be able to buy a new or refurbished one as well. In the mean time you might try placing a wanted ad for the parts here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=30 I hear that this is a good place to do that sort of thing.
Early Novas and Vegas with Powerglide or Torque Drive trans were also air cooled units. For that matter, so were PGlide equipped Corvairs, But that might be a bit of a stretch as far as interchangeability.
Well, since we are on the Hamb and the last I looked we are a hot rod site so I'm gonna make a suggestion that might go over like the proverbial turd in a punch bowl, but I have never been a fan of the 2 speed transmissions like the powerglide,,why not make the car a lot more enjoyable to drive with a 350 turbo or a 700 R ? I had a 63 Impala SS 327/300 hp with the Powerglide that I put in my 50 Merc and its Air cooled Just my 3.5 cents
bobss 396 You are Right I just remember that I have a Trans Cooler in the Front of the Radiater My Mind is going Crazy since I lost my Wife Sorry Just my 3.5 cents
I'm right once in a while.. BRB, printing this out to show everyone here at home... In fact I sold a PG many years ago to someone who owned a '63 Impala, nice car. He managed to mangle the coolant lines somehow, plugged 'em up. Fried it within a couple of weeks. Bob
I've known Kenny for about 40 years, and my Father and his Partner much longer,he worked with my father's late partner at Rice Chevrolet back in 61-62.It seems to me I may have seen them used in belairs, and Biscaynes, with the smaller 6's, but I know for sure they were used in Nova's.I was surprised to see it in a Corvette.I don't remember if they were used in any small V8 motors like 283'
And so is the converter. As far as I know the "air cooled" part was the trans case. I had one and it had 2 big holes in the bellhousing section. I used a comon PG converter and flex plate. Drove for miles. Those trannies don't run a trans cooler on them, I put one one because the trans case is taped for it just plugged. Pat
No the correct convertor had a shield that acted as a fan,the other convertors will fit they just won't cool.
I have a convertor out of a 62 Nova that was air cooled. Pm me and maybe we can figure something out. It would need flushed for sure but most ****** shops can handle that.
Not really common in a Vette but they do exist. The GM parts and service catalogs show them available. I'm thinking they were even available behind the 396's in maybe '65 -'66 models.
