God damned Brits and their silly news reels... It was all propaganda, wasn't it? Sure, they went 403mph in 1964, but the great Sir Craig Breedlove went 407 in '63 and 555 in '65! Come to think of it, this...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
If i remember correctly there were two world landspeed classes in the 60,s. Campbell did it with conventional driveline to the wheels in his class and Breedlove did it with thrust power in his class. How did Breedlove become a Sir ?

I don't recall Breedlove needing his Teddy along shotgun inside Spirit of America, but I could be wrong. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Donald Campbell set the world record in a wheel driven vehicle. Since he did it, higher speeds have been set at Bonneville but they didn't have anywhere near as high profiles, nor did they have that whizzo-sounding commentator doing the Pathe News voice-over. Here's the link to Wikepedia wheel driven LSR's - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel-driven_land_speed_record Cheers. Oh yeah, and I couldn't give a rat's fanny about him takin' his lucky bear with him - he thought it was his lucky bear. Shame it let him down on Coniston Water a couple of years later when he tried to set the world speed record on water as well.
"Sir Craig Breedlove". DAMN RIGHT! Or General Breedlove, Commander Breedlove. a freakin' National Hero. Nothing short....................
Mr Campbell must have forgotten his teddy in this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=4xemKc2In5Y
Hell, how about Comadore Breedlove after he stuffed the Spirit' in the drainge ditch full of water at Bonneville nd damn near drowned...
A friend gave me a '63 BP fuels Bluebird toy a while back. These were sold at the time in BP service stations around Australia to commemorate the record attempt.
Anybody can bolt a kerosene burner onto a set of wheels and blow himself to over 7-800 mph but it take brains and ingenuity to go over 400 with a wheel driven car and all of the cars that are challenging the wheel driven record are American!!!! Rex
Yeah, Campbell was a real pussy wasn't he?... Jeez guys these guys have bigger balls than all you, teddy bear or not...
As has been said it takes ingenuity and perserverance to accomplish 400 MPH in a wheel driven car, Donald Campbell attained that goal and went on to try and exceed other speed records, he gave his life much like his father (Sir Malcolm Campbell) did trying to prove that mathameticians and physics professors of their time were wrong about mans ability to exceed sciences predictions. These predictions have been exceeded many times in various motorsports, including drag racing (300MPH 1/4 mile), 200MPH stock car oval track and other pessimistec predictions of mans ability to overcome current obstacles! Thats my two cents worth as a relative of the Campbell family that sacrificed members to prove scientists wrong!!!
His mascot was called Mr, Whoppit and rode with him on every run he made whether it was on land or water. It added to his humility to the public eye. And for those folks who want to go the 'big deal, Breedlove went faster' route, have a bit of a look at the Campbells' history, Donald and his father Malcolm. Some of the cars his father drove were absolute masterpieces for their time. Massive aero-engined things. And Donald made record-breaking his life's work, through out and out guts and balls. Damn amazing man!
Thats correct. I had one of those as a kid as well. I was 10 years old at the time. Sold mine over here to a collector in the mid 1980s. Donald Campbell was pretty much a houshold name in Australia during his record attempts. Every kids hero then.
I'm not sure if you're joking or not but your comment is far from true. VERY far. When talking of wheel driven LSR accomplishments I have always thought of Don Vesco as being every American's hero.
Craig Breedloves 407mph record was awarded to a tricycle. Bluebird CN7 had four wheels and met the criteria as a car hence the slower 403 record. After Campbell made his record runs in Australia he drove Bluebird CN7 in the victory parade The Bluebird K7 restoration :http://www.bluebirdproject.com/bbp/
Mickey Thompson broke 400 with 4 Pontiac 389s bored to 414 in 1960, wheel drivin. So 403 in 64 means ???? Plus I think mickeys run was faster than 403 that day. Those guys were 4 years late and a dollar short.
Mickey's run never counted towards a LSR, it was run in one direction only as something broke on the return run. Mickey never held a record for the Land Speed Record. As for Donald Campbell, his record of 403.10 was an official record for a wheel driven vehicle, set on July 17, 1964, and was not broken until the following year (November 12, 1965) by Bob Summers at 409.277. I was on the salt when Bobby and Bill set that record.
