could someone tell me how much of the 46 ford crossmember has to be removed to install a 700r4 ******. thanks
I would use a 200 if you have one. I had to cut some of the "X" to fit it in and the 700 is longer yet. We can make anything fit, but it looks like a lot more work. I could take a pic of the ****** in mine, but it will be a few days till I put mine back on the lift. My OT 4X4 is on the lift now with the front axle all over the shop. Russ
Yes, a 200 is smaller but at a cost. They're weaker than a 700R4. And you're only talking 2-3/4" difference.
That's a great template for length and shape but the 700R has a pretty long and wide pan with an offset to one side as well. Not familiar with the 46 frame but it took major surgery to fit one in my 36. Would have been easier to cut the whole X out and put an aftermarket X in designed for the job.
That's a persistent notion........based on early 2004R problems..but long since overcome and any competent ****** rebuilder can produce a strong 2004R. The more compact dimensions of the 2004R make it a better choice in many applications. Ray
Yes they can! And for the $2000.00 it costs to build a good one it should be strong. But hey, it's only money.
Hay waddayacare. Great piece of info. Don't want to hijack the thread but I am thinking of using the 700R4 behind a Chevy 292 inline 6 in my 48 Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck. Is there any models more desireable then others or more reasonable?? I have a good TH400 sitting around, but Guru Tom Langdon says to use the OD 700R4 as my truck probably has a 6:13 rear gear in it.Thanks. C G
Apparently you are resistant to accepting facts that differ from your own opinion, but it is more like 2/3rds that amount and about the same for a comparable 700R4. There is no argument here about a 700R4 being a good transmission...it is...the debate is whether the 2004R is worthy of consideration, especially with it's size advantage and 1 st gear ratio, for some applications. The answer to that is "yes", it very worthy of consideration. Ray Ray
Go here if you want to learn all about the 2004r's history, strengths and weaknesses...Could help you make a choice http://www.drwtransmission.com/thm_200-4r.htm
Accually I'm not an expert on the subject at hand, " How much crossmember to remove from a 46 ford in order to install a 700 r4 ". What i am speaking of is the debate that seams to surface, by 200 4r hatters, each time someone mentions it.
If you're referring to me, say it! However, unlike so many people that will agree to any idea, good or bad, I don't! I tell it like it is and, if not give solid advice, at least give food for thought & further research. Do you wanna here, "yea jumping off that cliff is a great idea you'll be fine". Yes! Find yourself a 700R4 with an "MD8" case and 30 spline input shaft. The case designation can be found on the right (p***enger) side of the belhousing just above the cooler line fittings.
Just got a fresh 600 horse rebuild with warranty and new planetaries and 2200 stall torque converter. $900 Never had a 200r but I bet its way more than that. I will side with waddayacare on ****** knowledge any day of the week. And he is always happy to help.
I wonder if Mr Waddayacare ever personally tore the direct stub shaft out of a 200 od direct drum or rolled the lo/rev sprag, or smoked the direct clutches?...or maybe he just read about it on the net. I'm sure he'll let us know, one way or the other.
Yep! Blew the planetaries out of it, had it fixed. Blew the sprag out of it, had it fixed. Broke the main shaft in it, had it fixed and sold the P.O.S. Went to a 700R4 and NEVER had to look back. Now I'll get my freakin' popcorn out because in the country, you're innocent 'till proven guilty. Well it's time for the internet prosecutors (or is it persecutors) to finally prove their case and prove me guilty, not the other way around.
I don't like to guess and weld.... Drop the engine/trans combo into the frame, get out the tape measure, and go from there....
It has nothing to do with "Love" or "Hate"..It's simple logic.I don't hate a powerglide, they got the job done in their day but I think most would agree there are better choices for a performance transmission. Bottom line use whatever you are happy with as long as you made an informed choice.
^ ^ ^ Exactly! ^ ^ ^ If I could I would use a TH400 or a 4L80e. But the practicality side of me trying to drive a drag car on the street says I need an overdrive. One that not only has to hold up but fit without modifying the stock floor. So both the TH400 and the 4L80e were out. Tried the 2004R and that P.O.S. would explode at the hit of the key. Went to the 700R4, pound the livin' **** out of it and NEVER had a problem. And NO, it wasn't the way any of them were built! Both were built to handle the power, one could take it, the other bailed out. The 700R4 that's in my car now, has been in there going on 4 years now. That's 4 years of HHR's, other nostalgia events, a local series, 75 mph highway cruising and plenty of local road miles. B.T.W.: My local ****** shop (not the one that builds my ******s) uses 200's as door stops... SERIOUSLY!!!
Well then, Do you know how much of the crossmember has to be removed to install a 700r4 in a 46 ford?
Hey 56, TCI makes a lock up kit for 700r4 and 2004r. I think there is a year range you have to stay in. We can ask Wadayacare
I'm signing off for the day. I'm about to go cruise my Model A pick up, on Panama City Beach, and hope my P.O.S. 200 4r hold up.
