49-54 chevy help needed powerslide out 700R4 in

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by PBRmeASAP, Sep 12, 2005.

  1. well no quite, but will need to be done before the pile up...
i'm possibly a moron but can't find the old posts that people had pics of there modified trans crossmembers. also S-10 rear end will be going in, what years work best, and am i looking for a 2wd or 4wd rear?
Any ideas on how to hook the TV cable to the stockish linkage? my 235 hads mostly the stock linkage except instead of hooking up to the one carb, it hooks to a rod that goes to both carbs?

I think you want a 4wd as they are a couple inches narrower than the 2wd S10 rears. Do you have an adapter to bolt up the 700r4? You'll need one with the provision for mounting the starter.
As for the TV cable you will have to make your own bracket. Maybe you could get something from a later pickup (late 70's to early 80's) that had a six and a 700r4. I'm not sure if they ever put straight sixes with a 700r4.

The rear end should ideally be 60" hub to hub.

Lots of good info here and thery also sell tv cables.

FYI, buffalo enterprises makes an adaptor for 700r4 to 235.

i've used Walton's twice now for the motor and trans mount. straight fwd bolt on. you have to grind the rivet heads of your stock crossmember first. then bolt on the new one.

  6. I'll assume you liked the quality of workmanship?

    do you remember the price?

  8. does it need any floor modification?
is it just the big loop in the pic? or is there another part that goes around to bolt the trans to? did/are you V8ing the cars or keeping the 6's? if keeping the 6's what adapter kit are you using? im leaning toward the buffalo kit, wondering which is best...

no floor mods necessary. you have about 3" clearance between the floor and the crossmember. there is a removable plate that mounts to the bottom. easy access to the tranny. going with a 350/350 and a TCI MII kit, you can see it in the pic.

  10. Thanks,
talked to them today, seems they are made only for V8 applications, but it's only a few inches difference, maybe just modify the crossmember...gotta get one now to see...

    appreciate the help

You should be able to modify the stock crossmember as well.

The waltons crossmember has numerous options and i am sure you could also make a new plat to adapt to another transmission. (in case it did not work)

I also installed the walton crossmember and it was pretty easy to do.

I went with the 200r4 since it was the same length as my saginaw, hoping I wont have to change the driveshaft length.

Did Buffalo Ent provide any usefull info?

    Hope that helps.

  12. yah, the guy at buffalo had good info about gears and keep to 3.42 or 3.73, don't want to go any lower otherwise the motor will be too low rpm wise to actually run good, said he's stovebolt is doing 25mpg with the overdrive and a 3.73 gears, some other usefull tips , but cautioned me about hooking up the TV cable to stock linkage, but i think that maybe figured out already

Yeap, the tv cable is critical.

In case you don't purchase an aftermarket crossmember.

Here is a pic of a modified stock trans crossmember.

That crossmember from Walton is about $160.00. Just got mine, looks like a well built piece.

    trans on the way...
now for the adapter kit for the motor, and rear end...

[I'm about to put a 700 behind my 250 (to keep up with you if we end up at the same dragstrip again) Whats the proplem with working the TV cable into the linkage? I was going to drill a hole below the throttle cable and work from there. What are you looking to do?

  17. your cable linkage correct? mine is still the original mechanical linkage, but thinking about attaching the holding bracket wherever it needs to go to get the 1 1/8" pull but running it up the the bar that connects the carbs, might be tricky to get around the fenton.....
btw, i don't think you will have to worry, you were what 6+ seconds ahead of me...hahaha

I'm doing it about the same way as you so I think it'll work for both of us. I tapped the Offy for a for a place to mount the throttle bracket and will add thr TV to it.

  24. pop some pics when you get yours done.

OCP, yah, s-10 they are plentyful in the junk yards, and should have 3.42 or 3.73 gears stock

    Hey PBR,
I know you're livin up north of town, but there's a place in Decatur, out Ponce de Leon called Newnan's Salvage. They have piles of rear ends out in the yard. Super easy to measure, while they're laying there, or on the rack. I think he gets $100 or $150 for 'em. You can also weed out the ones with coil spring brackets. He let me pull the rear cap off to look at the ring gears. Most of the rears are also labeled. I zipped in, and in about 20 mins. they were forking it into my pick up. I thought about going to the pile up too, I get home on the 2nd.
Lemme know if you need any last minute help, I'll come over and check you out. I may need some help getting the coupe body back on the frame, hopefully for the last time, in November(?).
    See ya,
    Chad
