Tearing my hair out here. Anybody know of electrical problems on the 58 buick? Its a bit of a long story, will try keep it short. My buick had a problem with the starter motor not disengaging, i would have to remove the battery lead to get it to stop. Switching the ignition off didn't stop it. This was a few years ago, the starter had just been rebuilt. Over the course of the year of having the starter looked at, the engine then seized up. Last year i got my newly rebuilt engine back in, and it has been running reasonably well, on and off. No starter problems. Today i put a new set of NOS GM points and condenser in the distributor, as it has been running worse and worse over the last few weeks, ( the old ones were completely shot) two weeks ago it eventually stopped firing up altogether. Well, after installing the new points today, it still wont fire, i have a spark at the points but no spark at the plugs, after a few turns of the engine, trying to get the pulley at TDC, the old problem of the starter has suddenly returned. My car has had the throttle starter removed and replaced with a ****on. I push the ****on and let go, but the engine continues to turn over, i turn the ignition off, but the engine is still turning. i have to pull the earth lead off to cut the power, as i do this there is small amount of sparking as though the ignition is still on. Could this be a problem with the starter relay?

Broken spring on the solenoid, disk in the solenoid welding it's self to the contacts. Switch not releasing when you let off it. Those are some I can think of.

I changed the push ****on, and made no difference, the starter is rebuilt and has hardly been used. The car has only been driven a couple of times for a distance of 50 yards since the engine and starter were rebuilt. And has been started up once a week for a short while. It has been fine up untill today. The wiring in the car is pretty bad.

when they rebuilt the starter did they rebuild the starter solinoid . also no spark at plugs sounds like wires or distributor cap if you have spark at points

Hi there, yep the solinoid was rebuilt, i just had a look in the workshop manual, (didnt have it to hand earlier) and the problem i described is in the book, and lists it as either the starter (which i doubt very much) or the starter relay, which is actually really old and knackered, so quite likely it is that.

I'm surmising that "KNACKERED" is a polite term that The Queen might use to describe something that is "FUBAR". DD
