    Evening HAMBERS.

53 chev brake pedal return issue.

There is about an inch of slop in the pedal. Sometimes the brake light sensor stays engaged, constant brake light, as the brake pedal hasn't returned properly.

I replace the return spring(1 of 3 I have jus found out)

A good friend said you can adjust the sensor.

Can anyone help me out on this? Cheers guys!

There's a big switch with an arm on it, have a look to see if it gets stuck, an inch play in the brake pedal isn't bad depending on witch way.

MORGS. It doesn't stick to the pedal, more like moves with?? If that makes sense.

I can't seem to find anywhere where I could adjust that lever. It looks like one unit, no nuts and bolts etc.

The pedal has to come all the way up to work the brake light switch properly. Must still have a problem with the return spring. Maybe too weak.

  5. Switch is not made to be adjustable. I think you still have a return spring problem. Have you lubed the pedal shaft. The switch is made to be simple. It has some spring action to stay open.

  6. if it has 3 return springs and still doesn't return, you need to pull the pedal assembly out and clean out all the rust that is making it stick.

  7. Check to be sure the arm on the brake light switch is following the pedal arm. Staying snugged up to it.

I slipped a piece of rubber fuel line over the switch arm, so the pedal assembly pushes the switch farther down and voilà.

reminds me of our old clothes dryer door light switch, it broke off and the light inside would always stay on, convincing my mom she needed a new dryer. I grabbed a self tapping screw, ran it into the top of the dryer door and it contacted the brocken stub just enough to move the switch when closed. 8 years later, she still has the same dryer... sorry mom

You're a photographer? Post up some pictures of the pedal/switch when pressed, and when at rest....so we can diagnose the problem better.

Grab a pair of pliers and bend the arm on the switch in the direction needed.

Make sure everything is clean and not binding. Then, either get heavier springs or
re-engineer the switch arm so that it will work properly.

Is the car stock or modified? M/C under the floor or on the firewall?

What a response! Thanks gents! Really appreciate this!

After reading all the replies, ill try and clean and lube the pedal assembly tonight. Ill grab some photos aswell.

There's three springs. The return spring I replace, another that attaches to the chassis(which is more than fine) and another smaller spring, that doesn't seem to have much life left......

Yeah the switch isn't adjustable, just bend the arm, but if it were me I'd pull out the pedal and M/C assembly and clean it Mabey put a new bush in there, have you greased it since you had it? Try pumping a heap of grease in there if you don't wanna rip it out. If there's 3 springs and it's still not pulling it back then there is a problem somewhere

pull the pedals off the m/c and clean. my guess is dried up grease in the m/c pivot. put in new grease when done cleaning.

Excellent. Ill get started on it tonight.

It's bloody tight under the car, is dismantling the pedal assembly difficult?

Yeah just take out the master and the brake and clutch pedal should come with it, haven't had mine out, but I'm using an upgraded dual stage master and booster for mine behind the hollowed out stock master, just haven't done that yet ha

this shows the fitting between the pedals. take it out and there is a small piece behind it that pulls out. then the pedals slide out . hope it helps. [IMG]

That photo was perfect. I've just got underneath the car. Sprayed alot of degreaser on those pivots and found where the grease nipple is located. Excellent.

Before I rip the master cylinder out......

Ill try and explain better the issue. It may not be the return spring/pivots/bushes.

The pedal itself returns fine, but it doesn't return completely..... There is about a inch of free play in the pedal before you start to feel pressure, it is within this inch that the pedal is sloppy and has no return.
