My wife and I attend the Adirondack Nationals each year at Lake George NY. It's always a great event. We have a place in the area and cruise around the preceeding week watching the rods as they begin to fill up the area. Needless to say there's a lot of cars cruising around before the show. Here's a little thought I had. Just outside of town in Queensbury is the Glen Drive-In. It's a throw back to a better time and we've often enjoyed going to the movies there. I started thinking it would be pretty cool to have a car cruise to the drive-in on say the Wednesday or Thursday before the weekend Adirondack Nationals as something for early arrivals to do before the show. My thought would be to maybe do an early car cruise to the drive-in in the late afternoon so that you could look at all the cars and follow it up with a car or fifties-related-movie such as American Graffiti, Two Lane Black Top, The Buddy Holly Story, etc.. I broached the idea to the drive-in owner and he said he would be interested in doing it if he could be guaranteed around 300 cars in order to make it profitable. I'm thinking it would be something to do other than just driving around or hitting the eateries and it would be for everyone, not just the cars in the show. If you attend the show and feel it's a decent idea, give me some feedback. I'd like to know what you think
I had the same idea a while ago in the sense that I wondered why they didn't do that. I have been to every show since the beginning. They use to close all together and a few years ago they started opening on the weekend, and I thought wow that's great, I'll go there with my wife in the Falcon and it will be like the old days, (she worked at a drive in when I was going out with her in 71-72) but then you get up there on Wednsday and they don't open till Friday and there is to much to do on Friday and Saturday to spend the night at a drive in.Maybe get them to open on Thursday and show some good old time movies like Hot Rod Grafitti etc.
Exactly the point. I looked at it as something to do for the early arrivals on either the Wednesday or Thursday before the show. Open the ticket booth at say 5:30-6:00pm have an area designated for hot rods only and have a little mini car show at the drive-in. Follow this with an old Hot rod movie ( I pictured American Graffiti as the movie to show the first time). If it caught on the next time do maybe Two Lane Blacktop or just something from the fifties like The Blob, The Giant Gila Monster (I think it 's a 32 Ford in that movie) or even Rebel Without a Cause. I spoke to the Drive in owner and he said he never considered it as he's not really a car guy, but is open to the idea if it was worth his while. I spoke to some members pf the Albany club that puts on the show but they seemed just interested in their show itself. Too me I looked at it as another thing to draw people to the area and the show.
I grew up vacationing at Lake George as I have realitives that live on ***embly Point....this would be good to know...havent been up on this wk enk in a couple years and my dads been wanting to go again. Tony
Push them, I am sure all my group wouild go, we go up wtih about 40 people. It's nice to see someone take this and try and make it happen as I said I have always thought the same thing it's right there and was excited when they did it on the weekend till I realized Ithere is to much else to do.There is one by my brother, who lives on Greenwood Lake but the problem is by the time the movies are over it's 12 and I still have two hours to home.
The Lake George area is so beautiful for driving around that it is a perfect place to visit. I love the entire area but living there in the winters becomes interesting for sure. Best of luck Jimbo
Where did I say 40 cars? I said 40 people, it amazes me the amount of people on here who can't or don't read.Of the 40 people there may be 4 cars, show worthy.
My sentiment exactly, I only wish I could figure out a way to make a living down by you, and Lake George. My buddy bought two houses in Glens Falls and I was like why? He thinks he wants to move up there someday.
No biggie, I just get worked up sometimes.Yea a lot of that 40 are my children, grandchildren, friends ,and their children, etc.
Just figured I'd throw this out there again in case any other Adirondack Nationals attendees are lurking around. I think it would be great to see an old hot rod movie at the drive in.
