Got a Dana 23 rear end, tapered axle with keyed hub. The left hub popped right off,the drive side is stuck. Got a puller with probably 80ft. lbs. on two lug studs and the pilot hole in the center of the axle. Gotten it hot, not quite a dull red yet, no soup. Should I get it hotter, soak and sit, any other tricks? Edit: Got it, more torque on the puller and a swift blow on the puller bolt. Sorry for the spam..minor panic..
I've always used a puller that bolted to 3 wheel studs, with a "T'ed" top, tha you beat on with a single jack (Hammer) something like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...GoogleMKP-_-pla-_-Hand+Tools-_-9SIA1B10F65848
Seems like with 2 studs it wouldn't pull straight. Next time its' hot get some wax between the hub and axle.
Eric, you knew I was working on a Stude rear didn't you? Yeah, that's a nice puller. Guess I need one. When my two leg puller didn't work on the wheel flange I used a harmonic balancer puller with some 'adaptation' to the lug studs. Beat the **** out of it though... Thanks! Paul
Wax! Darn it, I thought about spraying something on it while it was hot but anything I had would likely have just caught fire.
Three legged pullers work best. Just when you thought you hit it hard enough, hit it HARDER! Don't stand in front of it because sometimes they fly off and kill.
Blowby, Never-ever strike the end of the puller bolt when removing a hub on a tapered axle. Doing so will brinnel the bearing and require it to be replaced. Always use the three leg puller with the dog bone as shown in post #2. I know this from experience as Hudson used the same tapered axle/bearing arrangement.
