I have used one several times. Just be sure to realize that the flat-towed car will push you from behind and will unload the rear suspension of the tow vehicle under moderate or panic braking. Best to tow with a vehicle that weighs ATLEAST what the towed car does. I almost wadded up both of my OT AMC vehicles when flat towing one with the other. Some stupid kids p***ed a semi illegally and instead of getting back in line they went head on at me on the opposite shoulder (I had slowed and went on my shoulder to give them room to get back in line). When I hit the brakes hard to slow down even more(doing 50 mph) the towed car pushed, unloaded the rear of the first car and sent me into a wig wag powerslide with a semi on one side and the ***holes p***ing illegally on the other. It was pretty intense for a few seconds!
i've flat towed my willys pickup many times (gas for the tow vehicle was cheaper than gas for the willys) and never had a problem. as was mentioned, never back up more than a foot or so when hooked to a vehicle with a tow bar setup
We sold a '64 Volkswagen to some guy that towed it with a tow bar from our place to York Pa which is 2 1/2 hours on the highway behind a Subaru. He didn't have any trouble but you want to make sure that both the front tires are the same size or it will wander.
I've towed cross-country and several other places with one. Just got to use some common sense when doing it. I'm not aware of any states accept CA that doesn't allow it. Michael
I flat towed a 32 Chevy from Fargo ND to Chicago and back. (Around 700 miles each way). I felt better flat towing than with a tow dolly. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I love my tow bar for my Baja Bug,just DONT stop somewhere where you need to back up! People tow bar ALL kinds of nice cars behind their motor homes, just take precautions w/automatics!I took the driveline out of my Jeep for the trip from Seatle to Boise...I think its really cool to see an ol wagon towin an old drag car!
You don't live here obviously.... see tons of small trucks flat towing small trucks or cars down to Mexico all the time on the freeways. Sent from a blue room in the oilfields of Bakersfield with TJJ mobile app
I use a tow bar all the time here in California. Been p***ed by CHP, received a nod, never pulled over. CHP office is around the corner from me, I tow bar past there constantly. VW tow bar is in constant use, no need for tow truck wait and expense. Great for business! Last year I had to tow my '50 F-1 behind my '55 F100, (both satin black) Went past the CHP office, 3 cops were standing out front with coffee, one pointed, all 3 waved. No wonder...my trucks looked like 2 elephants, tail-to-trunk. If there's a new law, we haven't heard about it. I don't go as far south as mexico, though
I toed my 65 Corvair from Eugine Oregon to north east Ohio with no problems.Taken cars to junk yard and drag strip also still have it for just in case
Still have one and a set of tow hubs. I used it ever Sunday for a few years, and towed between Jersey and Memphis a few times. Never had a problem with it.
Man I haven't seen a set of tow hubs in ages. We had a set for the Vic when we decided it was too extreme to drive to and from the track any more. Man that was a long time ago.
I have a tow bar for my Baja. Works like a charm. I have trailer for the rest. Best $1400.00 I ever spent. I borrowed a dolly once and it about gave me a heart attack. Granted it was a POS and I should have known better. I just reaaally needed to move a car.
I have an old 37 Ford frame that has a tow bar mounted on the front. Guy that left it at my place said he use to tow it to the track during high school. I also have one of those U-Haul tow bars that I've used a lot. Also have a car dolly.
Was told this by a friend bringing a truck back to Vegas from Mohave. Said the CHP said it was illegal and gave him a warning. I got to talk to him more, might of been for the towing/55mph law. He also had lights on the back vehicle.
Remove rear tires, bolt hub on, put tires back on the hubs. Leave towed car in park and its time to roll. It was a bearing hub that allowed you to flat tow without turning the axle, driveshaft, trans, etc.
