New classic-style barber shop is open for business in the Bend, Oregon neighborhood center

Bend, OR, August 17, 2012 (PressReleasePoint) -- NorthWest Crossing, a mixed-use neighborhood on Bend’s west side, announces the opening of the West Side Barber Shop in the community’s retail center. The shop specializes in cuts for men and boys, and offers complementary beer for adult customers from Bend’s Good Life Brewing Company. Owner Travis Maxwell previously worked at a downtown Bend barber shop before opening West Side Barber Shop in NorthWest Crossing with his wife, Jen. With its location on NW Crossing Drive, the West Side Barber Shop is the only barber west of the Deschutes River in Bend.

“When we first looked at NorthWest Crossing with our realtor, we knew it was the right location for our new shop,” said Travis. “It is a very family-friendly place with a great sense of community, and fit perfectly with our own goals of providing a comfortable, welcoming place for parents with their sons and men who want to get a shave or haircut at a great price.”

Travis, who is a Central Oregon native, has had an interesting journey to becoming a barber. He learned his excellent customer services skills during several years and several different positions at the iconic Les Schwab tire company in Central Oregon. Subsequently, he became a helicopter pilot in the Valley. When an injury required him to change careers, he went back to school to learn to be a barber. His wife Jen is also a hair stylist. He’s been working as a barber for the last three years.

When he’s not busy making the men and boys of Central Oregon look well-groomed, Travis can be found working on his '53 Chevy Bel Air and hanging out with his wife, four-year-old daughter and dog in the great outdoors. His extended family still lives in Prineville, where he grew up.

The shop should have online resources in place, such as a website and Facebook page, in the next few months. No appointment is necessary, but those interested in contacting the shop can call 541-647-6911 or email cruzin53sled@gmail.com. The shop is located near portello on NW Crossing Drive, next to the classic red, white and blue barber pole.

A man after my own heart. Hey brother post some pictures of the inside of your shop!

Travis, your shop is very righteous! I wish you continued success, mate. I'm going through humble beginnings myself but loving every minute. "May the blokes always tip, the pomade never drip and the blade never slip" Excelsior!

Cool story. I had a very similar situation happen to me about 10 years ago. Before we formed the Suedes, I had just lost my job and needed a new engine for the Ranch Wagon. All my friends got together to pitch in to buy me another engine and then thrashed one weekend to swap it in. I'll never forget it. That kind of camaraderie is what makes good car clubs GREAT. As was told to me then, you must be a good man to have friends like this around you. Pay it forward.

Great story! I wish I had any hot rod buddies let alone the very generous and great ones that you have over there.

Wish I could find a good group out here somewhere.

That's awesome, my hot rod buddies helped me extend my garage one weekend, a "garage raising party" if you will, so I could finally bring my '33 home. I too think of them every time I'm in my "shop". Can't put into words how much it ment to me.

It sounds like there are some good stories of friendship and brotherhood still going on out there. I hope you all continue to share them. Friends helping do a motor swap, others helping extend a shop...there are still some good hearted people left in this old world!

As far as enjoying my car...without a doubt! I'm working out a few bugs in it and am doing everything I can to cruise her from Bend, OR to Viva Las Vegas! I hope to document the trip there as well as the show and then the trip home. I hope to post it all on this thread once we get home.

It couldn't have happened to more deserving guy! Travis is a hard working, dedicated friend and member of his club. It was priceless to see his face and hear his reaction when he first saw his car that day of the surprise. yetiskustoms did a fabulous job on the car plus hiding the whole thing from Travis to boot!

Yeah, those guys are truely amazing guys! I still can't believe what they did for me. Unfortunately, the '53 won't be at the Round-up this year (again). On our way home fron the Viva show, about 5 miles outside Vegas, the motor went out on me. It didn't blow up or sieze, it just stopped running. I believe the timing gear went... Now I'm on a mission to save the money to get it home and get her fixed! In the meantime, I sold my s10 blazer and bought a really cool '62 Nova II 4 door. That will be my daily driver and the '53 will be my "custom"! We'll end up cruising the Nova to the Round-up this year. I can't wait for the show!!! Its one I really look forward to every year!
