160 MPH Stewart Warner speedometer

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oldfart, Feb 15, 2013.

  1. This is the 160 MPH speedometer in my Nomad. I believe it to be from the 60s.
    Anyone ever seen one?

I've been looking for a traditional 5" mech)160 mph for my Bel Air. What size is the one in the Nomad?
Most all I've ever seen has been 3 3/8.

I had one a few years ago, sold it on ebay for a nice chunk!

  5. They're pretty common around here. See 'em at the swap meets. I've had about 4 of them and still have one.

Didn't the studebakers come out with a 160 mph speedo but would barely do 80 in reality? :)

Here's one I located for my '46 Olds, 180! Think it's klm, not mph. Still scary in these old things, 160kph is 100mph

My roadster has one. Used to have one in my coupe, wonder where it went?

  12. I think Rocky is correct. They're not all that rare except maybe the ones with large logo SW on the face. I've got a 160 mph SW just sitting here on my computer desk. The numbers on the case are 550BPY8 which I think dates it from the 70's. Someone posted a thread on here once upon a time with the numbers and what they meant but I'm too lazy to search for it right now.

The one that sledge has for sale in the classifieds is earlier than that one. It has the all white pointer and bigger numbers. This one is from the 60's. The one's with black on the pointer are 70's or later.

I have one in our 49 Cheby PU with the orange needle. Just got it reading right last week with a simple plastic gear change in the tranny.

Yep, they are reasonably common, been made since i think the late 60s till now, but the new ones are way cheaper and chincier than the olds ones, ive got 3 at the moment and probably have had another 5 that ive used in cars. the ones that say "stewart warner" next to the SW logo are the earlier ones, and theres a few different styles of those.

They were very easy to find at one time but they seem to be drying up. Personally I don't want one with the black and white needle. Too new for me. I have no idea when they changed but the old ones have all white needles. Those are the ones that light my fire.
