Moon EFI,Any thoughts or comments?

Working on a '38 Chevy pickup,and would like to use efi on it.Has anyone used the Moon Stromberg style EFI?I like the look of the 3 deuce setup for this application.Any comments would surely be appreciated.

Sorta like putting a hollow blower over a carburetor with a fake bug-catcher on top with the fake ****erflies hooked up to look "real"

Or Buick aluminum drums hiding disc brakes, that don't fool anyone and make the rotors overheat, which was what the discs were sposed to prevent in the first place?

A while back I met the guy who was working on those. I would try to buy from him.

I have never had anything bad to say about Moon but then again I never really needed anything from them untill recently.

They haven't had a single thing I needed.

If I needed something in the area, I'd go to Limeworks.

I don't think they carry that fake Stromberg **** but I bet they could order something for you.

If I wanted to use something modern, and 3 duece, I'd go with the Demon 6 pack.

If I had my heart set on EFI, I'd order a setup from Hilborn. Their EFI looks way more trad than the fake, boxy 'Strombergs.'

If I wanted FI and TRAD, I'd order a mech FI from hilborn.

But that's just my prejudiced ***...

 

Way overpriced for what it is... For their price you could do a EFI conversion on a cool old mechanical setup.... not to mention Moon's customer service blows...

 

Today you can build a hotrod with fake strombergs that are really fuel injection, a fake magneto hiding electronic ignition, fake generator with alternator guts, fake solid axle that is hinged in the middle, fake finned drums over disc brakes, fake ardun, hemi, or oldsmobile valve covers for your 350 chevy, fake quickchange cover for your 9" rear end, all so you can go to a show and have people say "Now that's a REAL hotrod!" If you want a vintage look and you like fuel injection, get a hilborn setup, if you like strombergs, get strombergs. There's two kinds of hotrodders out there, ones that are hotrodders, and ones that just look like hottrodders.
Either way do whatever you want, but beware the Moon! Always try to go through the manufacturer if you can instead of having moon act as a middle-man that just has it drop-shipped to your house. They take forever and don't always charge the correct amount.
Has anybody put steel colored paint on a fibergl*** body yet? Maybe I'll do that....

 

For the record,this is for a customer project.He wants efi,but we have full reign of the design and think a tri power style setup would look better than say an Edelbrock 4 barrel design..A Hilborn converted to efi does't really fit the style of the truck,as this is a very low,stock appearing truck,not really a drag styled piece.I am aware of the problems with Moon,but didn't a place called Cl***ical Gas design this thing?

Yes,if it were mine,it would be 3 carbs instead of efi.The customer is (usually) always right.

 

I think most can spot the fake 97's from a mile away. So I guess if you cant use the efi hilborn and you must have injection at least the moon injection looks better than this

 

That's what we were thinking Tim.I can't help but laugh at the tuned port pic....luckily the customer hadn't seen that first.

 

How about Vintage Speeds set up? It looks cool but doesnt try to be something its not...i.e. strombergs

 

I get it now. That's why I couldn't build stuff for other people, it would be too aggravating. The moon setup may not be available through somebody else and does look the nicest for a stock-ish truck. I've never used one, so I don't know how they perform. All I can advise you on is when you call Mooneyes, if they say it is "in stock", you're usually pretty safe. Check the price in the catalog first to make sure they are charging you the right amount. If they say they are "out of stock but should be getting it in soon", I would look for other alternatives.

 

Thanks Gomez,that is definitely another option.Only thing,Vintage Speed has about the same reputation as Moon.

 

My 6x2 EFI took alot of work to get running right. Ken Farell is still the guy that builds these setups and is now working out of Barry Whites shop of SRRC. You can still order them through Mooneyes .I still think their over priced for what you get.

I delt with Vintage Speed in the past and would not recomend ordering from someone who cusses at their customers over the phone when promised something by a certain date. He's a cl*** jerk in my book.
