I found a 1932 chevy, not much left. All of the body is missing except for cowl, hood and grill. Windshield frame has been cut off of the car and pitched, grill shell is banged up and cracked, hood is somewhat restorable, only one vent on hood is missing, engine and tranny are there but locked up, frame is bent pretty bad, rearend is gutted, i think 2 of the wheels maybe usable. It does have an illinois title! No vin tag anywhere. Floor, seat and pillars are gone. there is a bodytag on the firewall. It was the guys dads car since the 30s but its had a barn fall o n it and then a tree which would explain why it looks like its been threw a grinder. He has it priced a bit high and after inspecting it in its current barn location he didnt realize the frame was bad and said he would nock off a bit on the price but i still think its to high. I believe its mostly sentimental pricing and i understand and dont really blame him for it. the whole time we are looking at whats left of it he is telling storys of riding in it as a kid. My question is what is it worth and what kind of offer should i make him. I personnly only want it for the title and whats left of the cowl to put on my rod chassis which to me the cowl is no good due to the windshield frame being cut off of it. The hood, title and dash guages are the only thing good on the car in my opinion. He is a nice guy and i dont want to insult him but i dont want to pay more than its worth. He is asking over $1000 and i am thinking $400. Is $400 a greedy lowball offer? any help would be great <!-- / message -->
You would be buying parts and a title -- $400 sounds reasonable. Be polite, make the offer, leave your phone number.
1932 Chevy's make cool looking cars IF you pour a ton of money into making it structurally sound,,wood kits are ridiculously expensive or you spend many hours trying to replace the missing wood with a steel structure With what you say is there and usable,,plus the title 400 bucks sounds about right,,best you can do is buy it for a low price, there are still a lot more cars out there,,walk away from it if he isn't reasonable. +1 I would have to believe that scrap value plus what you feel a clear title to a 32 Chevrolet sedan is worth would be the right offer. Figure that the title is worth half of the buying price. The main thing is that you really have to want to build a 32 Chevy because you like 32 Chevys and you aren't settling for this because it's available. They are nice looking bodies but are basically tin nailed on a wood frame and require a hell of a lot of work and fabricating in either steel or wood. If you are game for that go for it. You could also build the chassis and actually have it up and running with what is there while you hunt for a body which shouldn't be that hard to find.
400.00 sounds about rite. Not much usable on the car. I would figure what the usable parts would cost and go from there. The title is worth a few bucks.
I have a chassis and i am mainly looking for a the start to a body with a title. Rumors here in illionis have me a bit worried. if the vehicle is 1948 and older with an out of state title then it will have to be inspected by the state and can get exspensive. It doesnt have to be a 32 chevy. Anything from the 30s with a title here in central illinois is getiing to be slim pickings. this one happens to be very local but the only thing good on it is the title, guages and maybe the hood, other than that its pretty much missing and whats not missing is pretty mangled and beat up. wanting to prove that a nice, vintage style rod can be built on a budget of $5000 or less but my biggest worry is title work and worried if i have to have it inspected that it will make me brake my budget goal
Also there is no vin tag on the car only a body tag on firewall. with out a tag, is it a waste of time to even get the title?
so you buy the title for $400 (which, in my opinion is a bit much for historical paperwork) and the rest is scrap for the most part, and now you're tied in to FINDING a 32 chevy to work with... i'd walk away, keep your money and wait for a better deal. if he's asking over a grand, he more than likely wont take $400 anyhow... YMMV
What number is on the title? I'm guessing it's the engine number. The officer that did the inspection on my '27 Chevy had no clue where to look. I could have showed him any number and he would have written it down.
In Ill, you have a real hard time trying to register a car with out a title.Ive heard that a classic car with a title is worth 500 to a thousand more with a title in our wonderful state.I wouldn't put a dime in a car with out a title!
if all you need is the cowl and title...400 doesn't seem bad. 1000 way overpriced... if you do get it PM me, there's a few little trinkets on it that i may send some $ for.
Would it happen to be in illinois? It doesnt have to be a 32 chevy, it doesnt even have to be a chevy, just anything 30s with an illinois title
Im going back out there tomarow, he is going to let me pick threw a couple barns that he says his dad had other car parts and tractor parts in, if theres nothing in there that i can make a good bundle deal on then i may have to take your advice and pass on it.
Thanks for the heads up but just the gas alone to drive an get it would bloe my budget outa the water lol
lol i like to be differant. The frame i purchased was set up for a model A but finding a model A body at a decent price in my area not easy to do. Every body is into them so the bodys are priced liked they have been dipped in gold. I would REALLY love to do a late 20s early 30s ford truck rod but that will have to wait till i can do a rod an ALOT bigger budget.
What are you wanting to build. Would it be easier to find a car with a title. If you are wanting to piece together a car. I would find a roached model a and just fix that. I think it would be pretty hard to sell a car that is mix matched and titled as something else. Or find a car in another state that is easier to get a title. Or even find a model t.
If you do not have to get it inspected not having a vin tag is probably no big deal since the title is in the state you live,I think those years of Chevys had a tag that was bolted to the floor area near where you rest your foot but not sure on what side. Get the title in your name and get a reproduction tag to stamp the numbers on and you will be ready when you get it built.
Made him an offer today of $400. said he wouldnt take less than $1000. looks like hes gonna have some barn art for along time. Back on my search for a body with papers
