I thought you guys might enjoy some photos and info on my 1934 Dodge 4x4 truck. It's official name was the K39x4. It was the first four wheel drive that could be shifted from inside the truck. It predates the Marmon Harrington Ford conversions. Dodge, of course, went on to develop some fine vehicles for WW2 which subsequently led to the famous Power Wagon line. These first 4x4 trucks were used in the 1930s by the US Cavalry/US Army. Here are some period photos and some pics of my truck.

It's a classic "running when parked" story. The gentleman I got the truck from had owned her since the 70s. No background history before that. It has the cool 1933-early 1935 Dodge Brothers suicide doors. It is fairly complete and original with a few exceptions. The engine looks to be an early 50s Dodge 6 cylinder. It is a P motor rather than a T truck motor. The gauges are missing and the truck has some lower cab rust but the frame is very solid. They made em' thick and strong!

I'd be interested in seeing some pics of your friends trucks. Are you sure they are 4x4 trucks? This isn't just a cool suicide door cab to turn into a hot rod-this is the first Dodge four wheel drive ever....

Uh...I'm pretty sure your "friend didn't
buy a couple of these" - (Dodge model
K39x4) -"off some farms". The cab may
be the same as the pickups, but this is
probably the only intact K39x4 still left
    in existence. Definitely not something
to part out, or build into a rod.

  8. Too cool man! Love old 4WD vehicles. Good luck getting her up and running.

  9. I was almost afraid to open this, I thought someone had slapped a suicide door cab on a 4x4 S10 chassis.

Nice spare tire mount, not in your line of vision. Quite a truck, would almost consider leaving it stock.

Very cool! Sounds like your smart enough not to "hot rod" it. Some things you just don't mess with. I've never seen one before.

That is the nicest looking dodge truck I have ever seen. Most of them are butt ugly( IMO) that is classically good looking. One of the only trucks that I would be disappointed to see modified ( except for maybe an old hemi.....)

Those older heavy duty trucks are awesome. You got yourself a rare find there.
Hope to see that go stock.

I know this is a hot rod forum but I have no plans to hot rod this truck. This truck is both the first of its kind and most likely one of a kind. I'd love to hear any more first hand information on these trucks. I've read about all there is on the internet on these trucks. Here are a couple of Army movies circa 1939 that have some suicide door 1.5 ton Dodge trucks....maybe a 4x4 in there but hard to tell. If ya got some time, grab a beer and check them out...

Post it on the WWII Dodge web site forums which have sections for prewar army trucks and any military dodges. You will get a lot of interest and help for it there. I would post it on both the pre WWII Truck forum and the WWII dodge forum, both at http://forum.ww2dodge.com/

    Awesome!

I had seen vintage photos of those trucks and wondered about the two odifferent fender cuts. Are your front fenders cut rather crudely? When I first saw the photo below, I thought the fenders looked an aweful lot like the REO Speedwagon dad is building.

Nice! I love trucks like these.

One of my uncles had a crane truck from the '30s that was still pretty complete. The crane was enclosed on a swivel and even had its own separate straight eight. He also had a ton of COE trucks and miscellaneous 50s Fords and Chevies. Unfortunately, is brothers sold it all off while he was in the hospital. :(

    Hey Barn Find,
I was flipping through a 1937 Army Manual I picked up an estate sale awhile back this morning and came across the same picture that you posted earlier. I thought of this thread when I saw it, now I know why!
