Almost done with my re-wire job (EZ wiring harness) I connected the ignition, starter, coil and alternator this weekend and when we fired it we got nothing This being my first full re-wire job, and me being more of a wrench turner than a connectivity guy I need some help I am using a 12 Standard circuit panel but it seems like the panel needs power, but nowhere in the instructions does it say how and there doesnt seem to be a Panel Power wire (which Id assume would go straight to the battery). I have the old power wire still ran but dont know if I can use it and where I would even put it any input would be appreciated.
Just me but i would prefer to come directly off the battery with 8 gauge wire to the panel. Might want to put a fuse link in it too. <object style="position:absolute;z-index:1000" type="application/x-dgnria" id="plugin0" height="0" width="0"> </object>
Should be a heavy gauge wire that runs to the starter and gets power from the big lug, which is where the main battery cable meets it. It should run to the ign. switch and power the panel from there.
@ Black sheep - that's exactly how we have it set up. We even put a 12v tester on the panel and get nothing. The starter wouldn't even turn over (which is brand new last spring)
I actually used a Saint wiring kit in my '55 but a buddy used an EZ wire kit in his chevelle. He called a guy there when he neede some help with some stuff and the guy was very helpful. You may want to try finding a number for EZ wire to see if they may have some tests you could run to make sure your panel is good. I had to call Saint one time and the guy was a wizard with thier kits.
You are missing a ground somewhere. If you are coming from the battery to the big lug on the solenoid, then to the BATT lug on the ignition switch and on to the "HOT SIDE/Constant Power side of the panel then everything on that side of the panel should have power. Do you have the engine grounded to the body/frame?
Hey slick welcome.I am about to wire my 56 in salt lake.I am wondering what does or doesn't the kit come with.I need a complete kit but can't shell out 5oo for the one I wanted.sorry I can't diagnose your problem.thanks anyway
Usually Power comes in from the solenoid, but have seen it pulled off the alternator also. Check the battery with a test light, then check the solenoid, there is a power input energizing the panel, that must be located and terminated, if it is trace it to the back of the panel and check it with the light, keep working your way upstream in the circuit, you'll find it. Get the old wiring out of there if you have not done so already. -Sean www.pmautos.com
I'm not an auto electric guy by any means..I'm also in process of my first wiring job. Am I understanding your opening post correctly?...you haven't run a power wire to the new panel? As I said, I'm not an electrical guy, but I do know if there's no power in, your not going to have any power out.
Thanks 55! My Kit came with just the pre-wired harness & panel, fuses and a few extra wire sets with connectors for lights and different alternators. I had to buy looms, connectors and I did heat tape on my head & taillight piggie backs because I'll be driving it almost daily and you know how unpredictable our weather can is!
Hey fellas, I got my wiring fixed and fired that bitch last night!!! I actually called EZ wiring and the tech told me the starter piece of the wiring diagram was wrong - so I just swapped the solenoid power from the "R" post to the power post (big lug like Mike said) and it fired no problem!!! Thanks for the tips and advice! I got the lights done earlier today and hopefully I can finish up the brake light switch, wiper switch and get the fuel gauge hooked up tonight before it snows so I'll be able to make it to Auto Rama this weekend!
