My car rides as if there is no suspension in the rear at all. It's the roughest riding vehicle I've ever been in... Since this shock is basically the same size as the spring, do you think this is why my car feels as if there is no suspension in the rear at all? Shock...compressed is 9.25" extended 14.125" Spring...The spring is 13" when out of car. When installed, the spring compresses, to about 12-12.5" I believe it is a 150lb spring. Car... 1927 Ford FIBERGLASS roadster.
The springs are mounted in spring cups, and the shock is bolted on each cup directly in the center of the spring.
The best old school coils for T rears are the Corvair fronts. Now then, first thing I would do is reinstall those spring and remove the other shock and go for a ride around the block. How does that work, still too hard a ride? If not , you need to change your shocks to something from a small car. If ride is too hardsh the springs are just too stout for your lightweight rod. If you are happy with the car's current ride height measure your existing springs for height unloaded and diameter of coils. Get to your local parts house and get into the back of the spring catalog where you'll find a number of pages listing all the springs by style, height, wire size, OD, and length at rest.
I can't do that since the shock is mounted directly in the center of the spring, what is to prevent the spring from falling out? I know I could probably take a "gentle" ride around the block is that what you mean?
