The Fort Wayne Police Department is currently investigating the theft of a rare 1948 Mercury tow truck.

The vehicle is orange and black and was in good running condition.

If you have any information that could assist in recovering this vehicle for its rightful owner, please contact Det. Newbauer at 260-427-1416.

I posted this on the Ford Truck Enthusiats' 48-56 board. If anyone can smell '48-56 trucks and parts it'll be the guys on the FTE board. It this truck,or it's parts are posted anywhere on the net or being sold locally someone will likely sniff them out.

The company I work for will have three delivery drivers in the Ft Wayne area on Monday. I'll make sure everyone keeps an eye open.

Ill be running back and forth on I40 between NC and TN for the next couple of weeks. I will keep an eye out. As for those who asked where they would hide it. In my neck of the woods dopers stealing cars 10 years and older because they don't need a title only a bill of sale to scrap them. They pull up to a house with an older car and drag it off to the scrap yard. They write out their own bill of sale and it is crushed for a couple hundred bucks. It sucks they got your truck hope they find it safe and in one piece. They should have their hands cut off for stealing. Make it hard to drive the next time they tried to boost one.

From an old Ford truck nut point of view there is a couple of hundred dollars worth of Mercury truck trim. The rest of the body parts are worth $500+and what would be left would be worth another couple of hundred in scrap. I could easily dismantle that truck in less than a day if I had to. I've seen people engage in illegal activity work harder to make less.

I want to thank everyone for keeping an eye out for this vehicle. I know it's been awhile since the theft but it's still out there somewhere and I have not forgotten about it.
Summer is on it's way and we'll all be out driving (hopefully) PLEASE continue to keep an eye out for this one and do not hesitate to call me if you have any information.
