1963 lincoln 65000 original miles im rebuilding the motor as of now car sat for 20+- years The transmission wasnt shifting gears or letting me even get to a higher speed when i first started driving the car. The more often i drove it the better it would get, eventually to freeway speeds, but still not like it should does it just need to come apart and clean all the parts or most likely would there be damage? also has fresh fluid and filter.
buy a can of TransX.....dump it in there and drive it. Rubber seals and o-rings get hard with age and leak so you don't get full fluid pressure where you need it. The TransX will soften them up and it should start working correctly if thats all it is.
This is a '63 continental correct? There's a part, iirc called the transmission modulator, its vacuum controlled. If its bad or you aren't getting a good vacuum signal, you'll have trouble shifting. I just went through a similar issue, mine turned out to be a combination of bad vacuum lines and just my own stupidity. I was driving in the wrong gear, but I just couldn't get into third.
Use ATF type F. Get a Maintenance Manual to troubleshoot & service the ****** and/or take it to a reputable shop. This PCA transmission has it roots in 50's Ford transmissions but has nothing in common with the C6.
