Im helping a friend assembling/fix up a Fifties Chrysler Hemi marine engine. And when i was looking at the block i saw the word "Sample" cast into the side. can anyone tell me what it means?? And if it was used for anything specific.
No museum It will end up in a 13meter mahogany boat from 1936, and 3" copperpipes as exhaust system... come on isn't it there any Chrysler specialist's out there...
sam·ple (smpl) n. 1. a. A portion, piece, or segment that is representative of a whole. b. An entity that is representative of a class; a specimen. See Synonyms at example. I believe "b" covers it nicely. The question is: was it used as a sample because of a defect, or just cast ahead of the factory run? It could be a very rare piece, since MoPar freaks are the most rabid of the "one of" group. On the other hand, it could be just a curiousity. Didn't help much, did I? Mutt
Don't think I'd want copper for an exhaust on a boat. Won't it become sacrificial with electrolylsis. Copper travels in salt water real easy.
Go to www.thehemi.com web site the forum there has a section for marine hemi questions. It most likely is a prototype run for a new casting or something like that. Chrysler usually didn't let those out for use and usually scraped them after they were done with them. But there always seems to be some proto's that show up out there.
Call the Walter P. Chrysler Museum and see if they have any info. Also, contact Bob Walker at Hot Heads--he's about seen it all. On a serious note, if that is some pre-production "sample", I would SERIOUSLY think about selling it to a collector or a the Walter P museum. If you get enough to simply replace the block with another, you're out nothing but time. If you get a little extra for it, you're ahead, and a rare piece is where others can ogle it. Chrysler enthusiasts would LOVE to see that walking through the museum. -Brad
i wouldnt know why your block says sample, but there are some odd things about chrysler marine equipment. for instance they had reverse turning engines for use alongside a second hemi with standard rotation to get out of using v-drives (i suppose). i like the hell out of your friends project though. maybe talk him into using two flat sixes instead. or a mopar straight eight would be cool too.
That boat gives me wood! Seems to be a suitable receptacle for that motor. Please keep us posted as to progress. jerry
