What's up guys/gals! So I'm putting together a sbc for my 64 Chevelle wagon and I'm trying to keep the early 60's theme and still have a little performance. Gonna run 283 valve covers and an Edelbrock performer RPM with the oil fill tube and breather. So my question is, what air cleaner looks period correct but still breathes? I'm in Colorado Springs and a little over 6000 feet, so breathing is good! Pictures and names would help a lot! Thanks!

It's not together yet. Still collecting internals for it. Not even sure what color it's gonna be either. The car will most likely be green and white. Gonna run 14" chrome reverse with skinny whites as well. I thought about the standard chrome top air cleaner but was hoping to use something a little different. Well, as different as can be with a sbc!

When I ran a single four barrel on my 23 I used a knock off of an old Stellings and Hellings (or Hellings and Stellings) air cleaner. It seemed to fit the era pretty well and filled up the top of the engine quite a bit.

I wish I could tell you. I bought it from a vendor at Turkey Run in Daytona about 5 years ago, and I don't know his name. He sets up a booth there every year and I have seen them as recently as this past November, but I have no idea who the mfr is. It is actually pretty good quality and the chrome held up great. I think it was about $75.00.

Someone on here will know though, I'm sure.

Oh, I think I found a source for them. Vintage Speed here in Florida. Look at the 4 V one they picture.

The link is a little goofed up, but click on their catalog then put in a search "air cleaners". It is in there.

That isn't who I got it from, but it looks exactly the same. Just make sure they have it in stock and can ship immediately, as they are sometimes a little slooooooooooow on shipping.

I've seen them on koolrides.com for about $150. But how did they perform?

Why not use one from that time. They are out there but you have to look for them. I paid 15 bucks for this one. I doubt that you can get one for that on a web site. It takes a little effort but the rewards are worth it.

My vote is a reproduction '65 L79 chrome air cleaner. Expensive, but unique and fits the look you're after.

Doesn't matter really. Just run a good K&N filter. My 3 deuce's run great with the K&N and I'm at 5300 feet.
