65 XP Fairmont "Bagged & Candy Flaked" Build Thread

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by pinup65, Jan 22, 2013.

  1. I have been on here for along while now and have just realised I have never done a build thread on my XP-even though I have been asked a bit, so for those requests here goes.

Started with what I thought was a fairly rust free 1965 XP Fairmont (from what I have been told a fairly rare car,1935 XP Fairmonts were made and only 35 wth charcoal grey interior) PITY I DONT LIKE STOCK. The car was my wifes daily driver for a year or so before we decided on the candy/flake roof. The car is a 221 six cylinder powered car and WILL remain that way-although
I have an Offenhauser Triple Carb manifold for it. I will continue the story throughout the updates, but its safe to say it aint my wifes daily anymore. Now for a few pics to start.

The day I picked it up

Started with some pinstriping in candy red on the front and back

  2. However went to a few shows and saw how popular candy red was, so my wife with the help of Mat Egan from Extreme Designs picked a new colour. The result

Multi layer candy flake using House of Colour Oriental Blue, silver and purple for the fading. The hibscus flowers were done with hand picked vinyl stickers then the paint, then removed the stickers. As you can see it has multiple size flakes in the paint. We then added the visor and the faded and flaked wheels

  3. We drove it like this for about 12 months then decided it was time to cut out the little rust we knew of, however when we bead blasted the bottom of the car the rust was worse than we thought so the modifications started

Nice so far, subscribed to see the rest of the build. My parents had an XP Falcon wagon for a while - I got my licence in it, and repainted for them a couple of years later. Did it 2 tone metallic blue, although in hindsight 2 tone metallic green would have been more like the original colours.
