Wondering what all has to be done to convert from a generator to a 1960's externally regulated alternator on a GM. Want to swap my 56 pontiac over to alternator, but would like to keep the regulator. Anybody have any info or wiring diagrams?
OLDSROCKET, Here is a pic from the above mentioned thread that should be of some help. The wire from the accessory terminal on the switch with the inline resistor is not necessary.
I would replace the light bulb with a resistor, and then connect a volt meter to the IGN circuit and ground. Volt meters measure voltage ACROSS two points. Ammeters measure current THRU a wire.
No, you would need to connect the existing stock ammeter the same way it is now connected...between the battery and the rest of the wiring. If you replace the idiot light with an ammeter, the ammeter would never move, as very little current flows thru that wire. The ammeter should go where the A is in the modified diagram. Beware that high current will flow thru the wires to the ammeter, so you have to be very careful with wiring and routing.
Is it possible/recommended/not recommeded to do this with a "generator" voltage regulator as shown in the picture? If possible what would the wiring diagram look like? Paul
You can't use a "generator" regulator because a alternator regulator converts AC current to DC current.
