I am helping a friend with a project. The auto had been in a field for many years and the local roden population made it a home. we have removed all the interior and the wireing all that is left is metal and the smell of rat piss and *****. It has been pressuse washed and lots of soap used.it has had several gallons of clorox and vinegar applied. but when you cut with a torch or weld the rat smell comes back. We are thinking about stoping this project .PLEASE..Can any one help?..........Thank You... Bobby..

I would try spraying Febreze on everything that could have been touched by rodents. My car had a strong rodenty smell when I first got it and after a few applications of Febreze there was no more rat funk.

I also had to use a coat hanger to pull out the rats nests that were inside body panels and even in the trunk bracing.

I cant remember for the life of me where to get it, but there is an "enzyme" in a spray bottle that kills all that, and I cant remember what its called either....

I can do some searches and se if I can find the info on it again.....

  4. If you have already tried all the above ,Id say that should have got it UNLESS:) you have some areas that were not reached in the washing....

Id try some Muriatic acid mixed with water ,then follow that immediately with a neutralizing wash to stop its affects THEN wash thouroghly a second time.

be sure to use a metal cleaner/metal prep to prepare the metal for the ETCH PRIMER......[A MUST!]

Do like 69Luck say's, then try this trick. After everything has been removed and cleaned inside and out, do the fabrez trick, THEN close the car up and put stacks of old newspaper foot high or so in the car and let it absorb the smells. After a day or longer ( the longer you wait the more the smell will absorb in to the paper) change out and repeat over and over. Cheap and does work in certain cases. There are $$$ costly other products that claim to work also.
....... I had a rental where they flaked out with out telling me, so I had a frig full of roting milk, meat and food. They leave and month later when the rent is due I notice excessive flies in the windows and then electric gets turned off in the mean time. So by the time I get the place back you can smell this mess from the out side (black meat/ magots ,mold/fuzz and all). I threw away all the food and cleaned with every know expensive chemical that I could try including the sure fire operating room cleaners, but nothing worked. Over a 3 week time the smell never got less. So before throwing the frig away and a little Internet research I did the following. I put two stacks of news paper in the closed frig for two days the threw that away and repeated. Every time I did this the smell got less, until after 3 weeks all the smell was gone and it has never came back in over 2 years. So the paper ****ed all the bad smell right out of the frig and its insulation and hidden areas. Saved me whole bunch of $$$$. Try it may just work in your car, certainly can't hurt it and it's almost free..
    Good Luck H

I had the same problem with a 50 chevy sedan delivery. After all the vinegar, soda water, pinesol tricks, I shot the entire interior [after doing all the welding] with acid etch primer and followed it with a thick coat of POR-15 to seal the metal....never smelled bad again.

An open box of Baking Soda can make a big difference inside a fridge...maybe a couple of boxes placed inside the car could work too. Just leave it in there while you work on the car.
    Cheap and no mess.
Combine it with the newspaper trick...but I don't think you'll need to toss the BSoda every day or two!

i had over a foot of rat ****  in my bus when i got it & the only thing i found that would really kill that odor was Professional Strength "Germicidal Cleaner" that i got it from my local True Value store. i had tried everything i could think of & this did it. hell if it'll kill the smells & those nasty bugs at places from hospitals, nursing homes to poultry & turkey farms to hog & cattle farms i know it'll kill that rat piss smell in that project. in less then 5 minutes after i sprayed the bus u couldnt tell it had smelled. the smell is the only reason my project had sat out side for over a year, cause it STANK    BADDDD! ! ! ! ! i don't know what was worse, the way it smelled or the wife *****'n about the smell & it was a good 20 ft from the house & she could smell it...joe

Get a couple cases of brake clean, the clorinated kind, and spray every inch of inside metal. Use wire brushes to scrub everything and compressed air to evacuate the runoff in the seams and such.
Wear appropriate resperators( Not dust masks!! ) while using large quan***ies of brake cleaner, cause it just might screw you up

  10. I had a '47 De Soto a few years ago. The car had been sitting in a garage from 1963 untill I pulled it out in about 1995.

When the car was put in the garage it was in near perfect condition, with only 32,000 miles on it.

It was a one owner car from California with the original paint and interior.

The garage was full of other junk and mice had infested the car over the years. Now when I say "Infested" the car I mean like nothing I have ever seen.

The first time I opened the door of the car the smell of amonia was so strong it nearly knocked me over. I had never delt with a car that was totally infested with mice and the smell like this, not thinking too much about it, I proceded to dig the old car out of the garage thinking I had found a real jewel.

Once the car was out of the garage, which took nearly two days!! I got to take a good look inside the car.

This is where the story gets good. From first glance it didn't seem too bad. No visible signs of what was to come. THere was visible sighns of rodents in the trunk and that was aabout it.

I got the car loaded up and towed it home. I put it in my garage and didn't think too much about it.

The next day about noon I went in the garage to give the car a closer look. The first thing I noticed was the amonia smell in my garage as soon as I opened the door. I thought this was strange but still just shruged it off not knowing what was yet to come.

I happened to look under the car and thought there was some clumps of mud or something that had fallen from somewhere. But after closer inspection I noticed some baby mice under the car!

I opened the trunk and started to move some junk around and found some more LIVE mice. a live mouse mouse runs between my legs right about now and of course I screamed like a little girl and ran half way down the drive.

Still thinking this might be just a slight inconvienance I start talking the rest of the stuff out of the trunk, thankfully not finding anymore "Live" mice. All the while thinking how bad the smell was.

This car had nest everywhere!!! The Headliner was full of droppings. Under the seats, in the door panels, every crack and crev***e you could imagine. Under the seat in all the seat springs. It was unbeliveable.

I removed every piece of interior and the headliner down to just metal in the car and was surprised to see how bad the smell still was. I left the windows down and left it out side for a few weeks and still the smell was so bad you could smell it from 100 feet away. I left the car outside in the winter that next whole year and still it smelled bad.Nothing I ever did could get the smell out of that car. I eventually sold the car.

Now everytime I come across a car that has the "Smell" I will avoid it at all cost, knowing the smell will never go away. I firmly belive the amonia had soaked into the metal on that old Desoto never to be gotten rid of.

So thats my story. Hopefully you can rid the car you are working on But if it was invested like mine, don't count on it.

Smells like this are caused by bacteria. You need to kill it. You need to close off the affected area any way you can and burn sulfur sticks inside the car. This will kill the bacteria from what I've been told. This is supposed to be the trick for fridges so why wouldn't work on a old car as long as it had windows still in it. Give it a try. Just put the sulfur stick in a baking pan or something. Worth a shot. I have no idea where you would get them.

I would like to THANK every one for their input. to add more the car has no windows no seats no interior no wireing no bakeolite or plastic just metal. I went by today and my friend had done some gas welding and that car stunk. I guess that the urine is etched in the metal. It has large rust spots from the acid of the piss.one hamb member told me that rodents dont hold back urine that they do not have a fuctioning blatter so they piss as they move around. I will try some of the cures during the next week I will let you know what works. THANKs to EVERY ONE AGAIN. the HAMB has a wealth of information.... Bobby....

i bought a 50 Ford this past spring and it stunk bad. When i pulled the seats and headliner out it had been home for a lot of rodents. I was outside sanding on my inside window frames and could smell the urine still did not realize how bad it really was. The local prison did my upholstery, seats, door panels etc. They told that urine stench was in my seat frames and springs so bad that it almost stunk them out of the shop. They were able to get it out of the front seat pretty much but back seat not so good. I have that back seat in a spare bedroom down stairs closed up, once in a while when i went in there on a hot day i could smell it they said just keep spraying it with Fabrese. My car has no windows in it now so i cant smell anything but i sure do wonder how that is going to be when it gets all put together. Hot day hmm?

Totally agree with ya Joe. Health wise, I figured until he found it or got something, at the very least disinfect right away with whats easy to get, so start with bleach. The smell... you're right, bleach wont do it.

Ok, while we are on the subject, what will get cat **** odor out of cloth seats? Stupid cat got in my truck and left a big steamy pile on the back seat...I'v cleaned it with some of that orange clean stuff, and soaked it in Febreeze (I think all it does is mask the smell for a while), if you let it set in the sun for a few days it's litterbox smell all over again. Think the newpaper trick might work for this?

Wrap the dead cat with newspaper. Febreze has worked pretty well for me for odors.

It can be found at the expensive pet stores and the **** works.
I spilled a whole gallon of milk into my wifes car and you wouldn't believe the odor.
after a good rinsing this stuff killed the bacteria and never smelled again.

I just saw a commercial for it this weekend, but I can't remember the name either.

A bucket full of charcoal (I hear Lump style works better than Briquets) is supposed to absorb smells in an enclosed space, but without killing whatever is causing the odor, it would be wasted time.

A big mailorder place--I think Dr Johnson and Smith? Anyway, any dog freak will be able to give you a catalog....has this stuff in bulk for breeders and kennel owners. Sounds like you need it in bulk, too. Good luck.

The 54 Olds 88 I have that's been in storage since 66 stinks like that too.

I got some "air freshener/deodorizer" **** from Lowes that comes in a package just like the permatex hand cleaner.

    Really heavy duty citrus stuff.

I opened it up, put it in the car, and closed the doors for 3 months.

Now it smells like mouse **** *and* oranges. Great.

update. I talked to a friend who has a friend who works at a elder care falculty. he gave me some of the germacide. I sprayed it all over the car. WE even drilled some holes to try to reach as much as we could. next to the sand/media blaster friday and then a respray of the germicide and I will let every one know the results. .One thing wear old clothes because the smell of the chemical will stay on clothes[I put in bucket with detergent} and on your skin I have already taken 2 showers and it stays. Plus I also wore a 2 micron respirator.. I did not dilute as per directions I went a little on the strong side.I would like to say THANK YOU to all for the very good input and help.... Bobby..
