here's another thing about running mirrors over cameras...

this is a truck, and traditionally trucks have mirrors...so it's not like it'll look outta place with 'em on there

cameras??....are you gonna put billett wheels on your truck too??

with such a traditionally looking start, including the rounded box, I think that steps like this would ruin the look.

    of course.....this is JMO! :D

your work is looking great thus far!

you could run a rear view camera, mounted high on the back, maybe blended in someway to help with backing up. think 58 impala roof scoop, and hide it in there.

He could run the small mirror's for the look, yet have the camera's for safety, for the monitor you use a flip up in-dash receiver so the screen folds away when you are not moving.
Camera's are so small today , that they can be molded in & be virtually invisible.

No mirror's for my Truck, in fact she didn't come with any from the factory. '48 Dodge

Awesome project! Who would have thought that the mirrors would be the biggest topic on this thread! I agree those west coast mirrors look like *** but Im sure what ever you pick will look great on this truck! Keep posting pictures very cool build!

Might want to carefully check the laws. Cameras as side view mirrors may be an issue with the law. I'm all for technology and like the clean look it could give the truck but most laws are written to include this: two review mirrors One would be mounted on the exterior driver side and the second would be interior middle or p***enger side exterior. The key world to a LEO is "Mirror".

I don't know about the other 51 states, but this is the way Mi. law reads.

Outside rear view mirror on driver's side, properly adjusted.
Outside rear view mirror on each side if view through rear
    window obscured.

For those who don't drive trucks with blocked/obscured vision, drive one for a few thousand miles and maybe you'll understand the need and desire for large mirrors on each side.

I certainly didn't mean to de-rail your build thread with the mirror discussion! Some good points though. One thing about the HAMB, you'll get peoples opinions, whether you want them or not!

I LOVE your build, BTW, it'll be killer.

I'm not a big fan of stacks, either
but if you're gonna' run them, at
least put some heat shields on them.
You can get them. made of perforated
metal - polished stainless or chrome
plated steel, in various diameters, at
any 'big truck' chrome shop or exhaust
shop. Besides shielding the stacks and
    preventing people from getting burned,
they're useful for attaching grab handles
to, to help you get in and out of the cab,
which particularity on a cabover, could
be a useful and often, a just about
    necessary addition.

I wonder if the mirror laws apply to a 1941... If they do, the idea of a little mirror for LEO and cameras for reality seems like a good one...

We decided to have the the new cabs floor at the same height trough out the whole cab. We will replace all the old supports and sheet metal to accomplish this. This will also help in placing the new cab mounts.
This is after removing the old support and sheet metal. We also tack in a temporary support to keep the cab square while we removed the old support.
After removing the sheet metal we found that the rust was a little worse then we expected. Will be replacing the corners for sure.

Time to start the rebuild. We will also replace the upper support brace in the picture.

I was a little short on pictures. Here Chris is welding in the two new supports. The 1.5" square tubing is a jig to keep the new supports on the same plain.

These two braces will be for the notch that we will be taking out of the cab. The reason for the notch is two things, to have better air flow to the engine that is behind the cab and to be able to have the cab channeled over the frame about 1.5".

    The cut

Added a 1.5" cross brace for more support.

Finished for now, but will be adding more supports and will complete the notch later. The plan is to place the cab back on the frame and figure out where the new cab mounts will be. We are still working out the front mounts and the new bracing. We think we have the game plan figured out for this and will work on it this week.

Looking very good. You might consider pushing the firewall and toe-kick forward. I did and it helped.

In the spirit of old trucks converted to food service, I saw this old fire engine in Destin Florida last week, now doing duty as a hot dog vendor.

Bad pic but a really nice truck

We have the cab back on the ch***is to get the body mount placements figured out. We will work on the front two first and work our way back. We took out the stock front cross brace where the original cab mounts were and have fabricated a new one that we think will be a little stronger. This will also give us more room for the radiator.
Here is the C channel that we added to the front of the frame rails. It is the width of the frame with 3" legs. The body mount will be placed on top. We are using a universal mount from Energy Suspension.
Not the best picture but you can see how the setup looks. Chris and I decided that we needed to make the pieces look a little less boxy looking.
The start of the reshaping of the front mount cross member.
All back together and ready for the final fit.
Ready to weld to the frame.
It's hard to see with the clamps but these are the parts we made for the cab part of the mount. The clamps are to keep them square while Chris welds them to the body of the cab. These parts go through a channel and welded to both sides of the cab.
All welded in and we took out the stock cross member that was behind the new one. Yeah no more chain to hold the front of the cab up.
Here is a better shot of how the cab part of the mount work out. The front is done and time to move to the back.
Here is a shot that shows the cut out that was made to channel the cab about 1.5". Next week is working on getting rid of the wood blocks and making the rear body mounts. Also Chris will be working his talent on making the cut out beautiful.

Looking good as always. I was wondering, with the stock front body mount removed, what will hold both sides of the truck together under the grill?

Thank You. The plan is that we will incorporate the radiator bracket too the two new body mounts. That will tie the two sided together and also make the radiator part of the cab and not the frame. We also will use the stock top two mounting points for the radiator bracket which will also tie the two sides together.

Thank You. We are planning on running AccuAir with Firestone air bags for the suspension. We feel that this will give us a lot of options for different ride heights and a nice smooth ride.

Nice fabrication work. Does the shop where you are getting the work done have a paint shop? If not Check out Fosses Hot Rods And Cool Cars When you are ready for paint. Jim (55willys)

I know a lot of folks out there that don't care for the look of the stacks. One of the main reason I went this route was to fill the space between the cab and box. We need a eight foot wide box to handle all the equipment and the cab is just over five feet. That's a lot of dead space and feel that the stacks filled in the gap nicely.
For the heat that they put out was a concern. I have a funny story how this problem was solved. My wife was looking over my drawing of the truck and said to me are those pipes the exhaust for the pizza ovens and I looked at her in dismay and said no honey those are the exhaust for the engine. Then I remembered a few days before this Chris said that he would like to exhaust the hood fan for the pizza ovens under the truck so that we were not blowing greasy exhaust all over the polished aluminum. So between my wife and Chris's ideas the stacks will be use for exhausting the pizza hood. The stacks will be warm to the touch and piping out the smell of good old pizza. It's funny how things work out sometimes:D The only credit I get is putting the two ideas together.

Pardon me sir, is that the smell of Jet Fuel or is it a Pepperoni Pizza smell coming out of your stacks? It is funny how things do work out sometimes but I like the idea.....

  27. Maybe you could set up an EGR from the oven & your exhaust would smell like a fresh pie.

Yes you can, it just has to be goat cheese, or other non-bovine cheese.
