My dad and I are restoring a 1964 Buick Riviera. We are to the point of getting the car drivable but for some reason the car will not go into Park. It will go through and go into all the other gears perfectly fine and it shifts smooth as well. Anyone know why it will not go into Park??? The lever goes into the Park position but the car will just roll down the driveway. Any ideas???

    Thanks,
    Vic

Before you condem the trans, take the shift linkage off from the trans and see if it goes into park. The indicator could be off and linkage out of adjustment preventing it from going into park. If it still will not go into park, pull the pan and have a look at the internal linkage

We did do that and it does go into park. It just rolls down the driveway. I guess we'll have to pull the pan off.

    Thanks so much guy's,
    Vic

The parking pawl could be broken (or missing). Not super common, but I have seen it, both broken and missing:

Is that something accessible with the pan off?

    Thanks, Vic

  7. That entire schematic ( except for the very near end of part 705) is inside the trans, accessible with the pan and a few other components off and out of the way.
