Short question : anybody know if a 1962 144six oil pump has a gasket to block or just the gasket to pickup? Long question : I ordered an oil pump rebuild kit and pick up screen for my 62 comet 144. The kit comes with a gasket for the oil pump to the pickup tube but not to the block. I can't locate an oil pump to block gasket. Plenty of places sell the pump to screen gasket but not to block. I noticed that new pumps for this car don't include a block gasket but some include the pickup gasket. My manual asks for both. I have not removed the pan yet to check to see if there is one on the engine now because i am waiting for the parts to come in( gota keep on the road). Is there supposed to be a gasket for the pump to block. If so and i can't locate one can i use a sealer instead. I want to get everything together before i start. thanks for any info
I have no idea if this engine has the gasket. However, I can absolutely ***ure you that you DO NOT want to use any form of sealer. The problem is that the sealer oozes out and can become a problem circulating through the oil galleries. A gasket is SO easy to make. Use a ball peen hammer, very gently tap out the mounting holes with the rounded edge. This secures the outer edges. Then use the flat face to GENTLY tap the edges of the pump and....a gasket is born. (if it belongs there) Again, do not use silicone or any other "gooey" stuff in the oil system. However, someone will disagree and tell you about Super Glop or some other product. But, gasket material is never a problem.
Don't use one, Ford used to supply one on all their engines, but quit the practice in the early 70s. The reason; over time the gasket can shrink and compress allowing the oil pump bolts to loosen, needless to say you'll start loosing pressure and could waste your engine.
Thanks, great explanation. tech at Melling got back to me, said not to use one if its not included in the kit any thoughts on using lock tight on the oil pump mounting bolts?
