Thought I'd see if I could get some suggestions on a chassis table(materials, width, length suggestions, etc). After reading through many posts here and some plans I found on the web. I have came up with this drawing. I will have a variety of cross tubes/uprights etc not shown I won't be mass producing anything, mainly setting up '32 chassis, model a, other small frames. I want something portable if needed although I have the room to leave stationary. I am currently planning on 3-1/2x3-1/2x3/16 wall tube Thanks Nick Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I think if you were to see 30 photos of guys frame tables one after the other in this thread you would see 30 different takes on frame tables except where someone copied someone else's pretty closely. I'd think the requirements would be: The right size for the spot you are going to place it and the right size for the frames you intend to work on. Strong enough to hold what ever you work in place while you work. Somewhat simple to adjust to what you are working on. I've seen one where everything was welded on the rack to hold the frame and when he did change it to use on another frame he had to cut some of the brackets off and grind the spots where they were welded down. That was rather crazy in my book. Your design looks doable for what you have planned and you could probably rig a removable table top for it to use it as a work table when you don't have a frame on it.
I plan to have say 7-10 cross tubes out of 2x4 tubing. I'll probably drill/tap the top rails so I can bolt these down at various places as needed Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Here is a very nice one, by Steve @ IC, aka Elpolacko http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=577892
My brother's has the side rails made of large I beam, probably 10" tall by 6" wide. Makes it easy for him to bolt his cross rails on top, and remove them for a different frame. Cross rails are also made of I beam, probably 4x4.
Mine is quite large, but the price was right. An old Bear alignment rack. I shortened it about 30 inches. It is adjustable width wise.
My next one will be one of these. http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/tls/3635631611.html I bought one brand new when I had my collision shop. They are portable. The beams are drilled from end to end, numbered, and the tops are blanchard ground. This one appears to be missing the 6 cross beams, but no biggie.
thanks for posting i was wondering what people use for these tables..i have plans on building a unibody car have you guys built a table that tilts to drive on/off? do you normally just use these tables for mock up than assemble off the table...i was thinking i would built car complete on table then drive off when done? i have been looking for ideas before i build my table...thanks for any help..pictures would be great!!
