    Hey guys,

I'm not sure if added this in the right section?

I've just purchased my first rod being an unfinished project. It will be traditional of course.

The plans are to find a 28 chassis and move most things over from the home made RHS one that's currently on there. I'll refine and rebuild as I go and not sure if i'll keep the body yet.

I'm a fabricator so I'll be doing what I can myself but wanted to know if anyone can recommend links on chassis and suspension building or rebuilding.

    Thanks guys!

You have the crossmembers, just make your own frame.... probably about the same price, and less of the god aweful sanding and blasting! You could go square tube or have some channel bent up if you're a non box frame guy.

Looks like the beginnings of a good thing! I'm guessing you want to use an original frame to make reg / engineering certificate a lot easier?

It looks pretty cool.I don't mean to be negative, but if youre not going to use the frame, body or suspension, then why did you buy the car?

    Cool start bro!

Im assuming you'll use the existing suspension/driveline/wheel and tire combo and transfer it onto the model a rails for rego/looks purposes.

Id be inclined to get an engineer involved pretty early on and talk to a few who've gotten front suspension setups like yours ( split bone and axle in front) rego'd in Vic. Its second hand info but a few people have told me the engineers took some convincing that this set up is safe

Look forward to seeing what you do with it

I think its got a good stance as is. I'd be inclined to fix what issues the current chassis and body have and use them. Looking forward to your progress.

    Cheers.

Not a bad body for a "first rod". And very nice bodies on the back wall

Thanks guys! I'll be posting progress pics as I go for sure!

    Handy links, thanks austinhunt !

That's right Liam-B I want to use an OG frame for engineering / rego purposes. It'll make it more traditional and I feel it adds to the look i'm wanting to achieve. I believe the rules and rego in Australia can be a challenge and more so without an OG chassis in some way.

I will use everything on the car except the frame. The body I like and how it sits but I want doors so I'll see once I get it. The big reason I bought the car is it's a great start for me. I have a car with the stance, wheels, motor and the look and height I want so when I get a model A chassis I'll have it sitting next to the car and use it for measurements and reference points. I'm a fabricator so it's only my time I'm investing. The reason I mentioned suspenion in my post is I want to strengthen and refine the mounts and cross member. I'm definitely using what it currently has. In Australia we need to get an engineers certificate to drive them so it needs to be done right.

Thanks man! I defintely will source an engineer and look into engineering the front end. I'm thinking i'll PM striper and see who he used.

    I hear you!

Nice ride jughead.I'm going to go out on a limb and say that" some rules" are probably good and some bad ,here i don't think we have enough,as far as chassis ,there is cars on the road here i don't want next to me under no circumstance, poor welds and engineering. Good lock with your build will be a watcher , Jack

  21. There is a lot of potential there.

    Hey woodbutcher. Thanks man!

It's times like this when we here in Australia wish we had more lenient regulations but I guess it does sort the good from the bad. I'm not sure if you know but in order to get a rod registered here all states must go through stages of engineering. First we get the chassis rolling with the suspension and driveline then employ an engineer to inspect it. If he doesn't like what he see's then it must be fixed before this stage can get passed to move onto the next. This happens until the car is pretty much completed. I'm just about to see how arduous it really is.

Can anyone help me with some links or references to rebuilding an open drive '48 rear end? I'm assuming you can buy rebuild kits?

I also have a mainline 3 speed manual behind the 8BA. Are these worth rebuilding or should I be looking for something else to run. I am thinking of running a toyota 5 speed for long trips although non traditional it is something I'm considering.

    Thanks for your help.

Just Alittle tip from one who had this set-up all chromed up in the 60s[first hotrod] your spring in front doesn't look astetically pleasing. If you put the spring in front of the axel It will look when detailed like it was factory built. Just my opinion.............. when you get a few seasoned hottrodders in the garage.......they will see this right away.the wishbone set up this way also looks like its bent from this angle, should get the look of it,.......... running with the side of the kar..Should flow with an open wheeled t type kar.
    i sold my t-bucket 10 years ago.had it 25 years.

Like the profile, also prefer doors that work, shouldn't be too hard to make.

Nice start, yeah the rear half of body needs to be replaced along with the zoomies, imho.
And being in Aussie you're , unfortunately, gonna have to put fenders on to keep johnny law happy.
