Hi all, I'm kinda new at working on Fords so I'm not too familiar with them. Iam putting a 1969 302 and step case c-4 in a 62 Fairlane. I just put a new flexplte and converter in and bolted ****** to engine. I just noticed on another website that some fords call for a Plate between the engine and bellhousing. I don't have one. Am I supposed to ? Thanks, Tim '62 Fairlane, 69 302, 290 dur. 471 lift summit cam, edelbrock Torker II intake, 8.8' rear w/ 4.10s, C-4, B&M 2400 conv., B&M QuickSilver Ratchet shifter
Also be careful as to getting the correct one. The starter position must be correct for the engine and transmission. Standard and automatic have different positions. The bolt holes line starter with flywheel.
Also, the C4 comes in a big and small bell housing varieties, 164 and 157 tooth flexplates respectively. The starters are in different locations on each, so they have their own block plates. The plate is needed to center the starter and give the correct engagement depth.
Ok, Thanks for all the helpful info. Lucky for me, there is a guy close by with semi trailors full of Ford parts. I'm sure he will have one. Seems like the local junk yards have s****ped all of the "old" stuff. Tim
Yes, you need the plate. It locates the starter accurately - the bellhousing isn't sufficient and you will have problems. Don't ask me how I know.
