I have a bunch of 1940 ford Standard coupe parts sitting around but I really want to build a truck and I was wondering if anyone knows if the frames are the same or can be modified fairly easily to work from a car to a truck? and also the front end parts like the fenders and hood, are they the same? Any advice would be appreciated.
I have seen the car sheet matal on the truck before, I don't know if it is a direct bolt on or if you have to message it a bit. The frame should be able to be worked out as well. none of it is going to be a direct bolt together but it can be done with a little imagination.
Front fenders, grill , inner fenders are the same. The hood is different. I'm not sure about the rear fenders, I think they are the same. The running boards are also different between p***enger and PU. The grille in a 40 standard is the same for 40 and 41 pickup.
The frames are virtually identical except for some body mounts. The front sheet metal is another story. The fenders have to have the mounting lip changed to fit on a truck and the hood won't work on a truck.
The frames are pretty much the same. The car frame has a bracket outside the frame rails that is not present on pickups (commercial car). They need to be removed to put the bed on. '35 to '40 car and pickup frames should match up. '41 pickup had three engine choices so a front cross member change might be needed. The hoods are not interchangable without a lot of metal work. The pickup hood is taller. I've heard the car fenders can be used with some rework at the cab and running board areas.
Basically the same thing posted earlier today. HRP http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=781375
The standards grills are the same but te hood has a band that matches the one on the cab of the truck. Front fenders should work by rear on trucks have a tear drop effect at rear. Interesting, a 40 front end will bolt to a 42-47 pickup cab but thre running boards are 5"+or - lower on the 42-47. Old & In the Way
Not SO fast on the front fenders...see BOTTOM half of drawing below (click on drawing, then magnify). Hoods are quite different. DD
My father finish/sold a 40 Sedan Delivery last year. He found that there is a difference in the bumper braces between p***enger and truck, as well as the previously mention running boards. As mention above, Bob Drake Ford would be a great reference to find out the other differences...
car & truck front fenders look the same but are not. do a search on here as this subject has been covered a bunch of times
I am not an expert,,, the basic frames are the same except the car frame has a pair of mounting 'blocks' for the car body. Just take them off for a truck. Front sheet group, the main difference between car and truck fenders is the mounting lip where they meet the body, the car is bent at about a 45 and the trucks are 90 degrees, I have two car fenders on my 40, also for the paint drip guys,, there is a slight difference on the fender between the bumper bracket hole and the inner lip, the cars have a slight dip and the trucks is a little flatter, really hard to see. I understand that the car and truck Ford part numbers are different. The hoods, totally different area on the cowls, neither works on the other. Grills, you can put any 39 deluxe, 40 standard, 41 truck grill and if you are brave you can use a 40 deluxe but you have to run no hood or butcher two hoods, ask Dan Collins about that job. I ran a deluxe with no hood for years, it is tough on the exposed electrical and other rubber and I even cut up two hoods and gave up on the project as it was WAY over my abilities. But 'nothing' is impossible. Alot of my information comes from my late friend, Frank Oddo, who knew a little about 40's
