My wife's '40 chevy pickup has a TH350 with a horrible leak...it is out of the pickup right now. Can it "pressurized" out of the vehicle to try and find the source of the leak?? thanks-
Most transmission shops claim that they can. Try an Amaco or the like, they should be able to bench test it for you.
The guy that does my trannies (Carl Munroe of TRS Racing in Keene, NH) Has a ****** "Dyno" and tests all units before they leave the shop - Carl literally wrote the book (HP Books) on modifying PGs and Torqueflites
They can be ran on a transmission dyno. Now all you need to do is find one of those and it won't be cheap. Where's it leaking from ? There's a front seal , a rear seal, a pan gasket, a few oring type dohickies and some honest to goodness o rings, maybe some threaded fittings and a vent tube
If it is the dip stick, do not use an o-ring. Go to a shop and ask for the sleeve. They will know what you are talking about. Also, do not use a cork pan gasket. Use the black neopreem gasket WITHOUT any sealer and torque the pan bolts to torque. I think it is about 13 ft lbs. Never had one leak.
a shop, let me re-phrase that, a reputable transmission shop, at the very least should be able to pressure test your trans via a few ports located in the case. under a lower pressure than normally run, I think they may be able to locate a leak. re-sealing a trans already out of the vehicle is pretty easy and cheap to do yourself. then again..."horrible leak?" could be at lines or pump body which are at a much higher pressure when the engine is running.
