It is a 1949 Ford Custom 2 Door. Partial of the floor will have to be replaced. Rockers are rusted out. Motor is shot. Frame is good. $1400. Is the price right for the condition? I don't want to pay to much when it isn't worth it.
Worth is worth to only one person - you. If the item is worth that to YOU, buy it. If you need to ask 100,000 people "Is this worth it", you are either trying to make money on an old car (nearly impossible), or you have a serious issue with your own decision-making ability. Sorry to be harsh, but if you've looked at more than one car (you have haven't you), you should have a bit of a handle on the market. And if you're just looking to flip, then you STILL don't need 100,000 opinions. Cosmo
is it a v8 or a 6? if its an 8 yeah its a deal if its a 6 not soo much but still not bad yes i read the engine is shot but im saying what i said because of the ease of putting another 8 in where an 8 was instead of where a 6 was
Have a plan for what you want to get out of it. your initial cost of the vehicle in this case is prob gonna be the least amount you will spend to get road worthy. If you can get the price down, that would be great. Speaking for myself, even if its rusty, I'll always take a mostly original untouched car. Patch panels for floors and other areas are readily available too for these fords. Nice shoebox!
I hate when I see these responses. Maybe he is a new guy, maybe he has come here like so many others to learn and get advice. So what if he wants to make money on an old car... its pretty easy to do, NOT nearly impossible. OP- If it has a ***le and its in your price range, its a decent price. I would try and get it for $1k. Any old 2dr with ***le is worth that.
if that is the car you are looking for, Id say go for it. but of course hit him at a lower price to see if he will take it. you never know. good luck and let us know what you do.
Well its too rich for my blood, but I am not living on your back account. How does the price seem to you?
If the rockers are toast, the floorpans are most likely ****ed too, but that is kind of expected with a 1400 dollar car but definately repairable. I would feel a little better at 1000 or 1200, but it is a cool old 2 door car that they haven't made in 60+ years so 1400 wouldn't hurt too bad. Good luck with her. Ask lots of questions and post lots of pics. -Abone.
you say the floor and the rockers are bad....how about the inner rocker box and the body mounts? if they are bad it will be a lot more work. the front body mounts seam to get rusted the worst
It's funny that people on here feel so strongly about $200 more or less for a project when the general opinion is that you can't get a decent paint job for $10k...haha
These cars are in every old wrecking yard. And about every other old farm around here. That is the reason most won't give much for one. Because the truth is that if you want to make one look real good. You have to chop it. And spend ten thousand on paint.
but Tulsa, he is right. The ONLY way to determine value is --how much will you give? and --how little will he take? and that is different on every occasion
Maybe there are nice '49 Fords sitting on every street corner in Texas, but he's in Minnesota, which I don't imagine is a much better area for finding decent 64 year old cars than it is in upstate NY, where I live.
Around here the crusher would pay approx. $450 -$500. That is just to run ir thru the shredder. So if it has paper that is good it should be worth at least twice that much to save. The guys that say you can buy something for less. Show your proof. Show pics and price of something you can buy today or tomorrow. Not something that you could have bought 5 years ago!
They are common here in Texas. I know where three are right now. They are just like every one I have ever seen. The rockers are gone and the floors are pretty ****py. And boat anchors for motors. All could probably be had for half of that.
Around my neck of the woods that is a great price for a complete 2 door shoebox. They all need work it's up to you how much time or money you wanna spend. I'd get it...
I'd say that's a fair deal. I haven't seen anything like it around here for even $1400. I'd like to see real world proof from the guys posting that they can buy nicer for cheaper.
I sold one a little rougher than that for $2k. I would say location definitely plays a part..if you could get it for a grand id feel ok about the deal if a shoebox is what your after.
I love reading these threads. No problem with the OP's, it's the responses that I get a chuckle out of. The price is good and fair. I sold a runner recently that was a 6 cyl four door with decent older interior for 3500, and another runner flathead v8 that needed everything for 5000. But, maybe I get lucky.... The OP should have said he wanted 2500 for it, albet most people here would say thats a little steep, and that 1500 to 2000 would be better...... This is the third thread like this in 3 days. The question shouldn't be, is it a good deal. The question should be what would you sell it for.
I need to move away from the Bay Area. that car would sell for $1400.00 on the first weekend on craigslist around here. especially if it has a V8. of course I am judging what I can't see by what I can see in the pics. so it may be worse than what I imagine.
Personally, I don't think it much matters if it is $700 or $1700... The buy-in isn't want is going to cost you. The real question would be whether you have the time, the money and the patience to see it through to whatever you see the car being when you put your rosé colored gl***es on. Some people truly enjoy the project and the hours and dollars to get to the end. Those people often sell and then do it all over again. Others really enjoy the finished product the most, cruising, showing off, drives in the country and events. Ask yourself long and hard where you really want to go and what you want to invest. Decide if a project is what you really want and whether you will truly see it through, or are you better off saving up for a more solid start, a partially finished car or maybe a decent driver to begin with. Really think about these things before you part with your money and you will come out ok when you embark on the journey. Good luck, and let us know what you decide! PS: looks like a fair deal to me.
Or here in Atlantic Canada. That one looks better than what can be found around here, the price seems reasonable to me but no harm in trying to get it for less. Oh, the paperwork is very important too, worth less or maybe even not wanted without paper IMO.
I am of the thinking that you purchase a rough car and spend a ton of money getting it back in shape you should save up a few more bucks and buy a better body. HRP
