This has been a long, long, time coming.
I have owned the body over 10 years now. It, and me, have been through a few trials and tribulations in that time. I am now calling it done, for COBO. It will need more work after, but enough for the moment.
I was building it to run on Bonneville for my 50th birthday. Had the engine, 4-speed, and had started on the cage when I got dropped to part-time at work. I was pissed and sulky!!! Decided to put it on the street instead. Thought long and hard, and eventully pulled the 4-speed in favour of a 700R4. There will be 3 of us riding in this, with my 15 year old daughter, Hannah in the middle. There was no way I was going to be shifting gears with the gear shift sticking up between her legs! I tried to make it a column shift, but gave in to the 700R4 :(
The whole build, with the exception of that trans, is what a regular guy would have built in the late '50s early '60s in his own garage, with the normal tools of the day. OK, I used a MIG instead of a stick welder, but everything else is right!
The idea was not to be too clever with the fabrication, nothing ugly or poorly made, just simple engineering and functional brackets. No "look at me"" brackets or over doing it, just something you would have found in the "Little Page Books" of the time period.
I love the craftsmanship of some of todays fabricators, its faultless. I think sometimes they go overboard a little at times trying to be above the last "latest thing". I'm not knocking the skills or visions, I just didn't want it for my car. Besides, I don't have half the talent they do!!
I had not done sheetmetal before, but I didn't feel I could call it mine if I didn't chop it myself. It took 3 attempts to get the piece above the drivers door right!!
Nearly 2 years ago cancer came knocking on my door, the little ****. They cut it out, got it all, and with a daily chemo pill, I try to keep it from coming back. The side effects of the drugs are nausea, the ****s, and fatigue. The first 2, I can sort of control/live with. The ****** fatigue kicks my **** though. Anything more than a few hours, and I'm knackered for days, and worsens the other side effects. Oh well!
I got it running in time for last years Sins of Steel. I was a dog with 2 ****s. Couldn't slap that smile off my face if you tried!!! I had DAed the body back to raw steel, and drove it for the summer locally whilst ironing out a few bugs. Started doing the bondo work in the fall, but wasn't really up to it. The original plan was for me to do all the bodywork, and then me and Hannah rattle can it! It was a tough decision, when I paid someone to finish the bodywork and paint it for me.
It looks better than I had pictured it going to be. A bit more posh. I still can't believe that cool '33 coupe I had always wanted is sitting in my garage and it belongs to me!!!
I never did post a build-up of the coupe, so here are some of the pictures I took over the years.
I hope some of you guys like it, I do obviously, and I realise thats all that matters in the end. Your comments are welcomed, good or bad, and those that know me, I expect the piss-taking to start with a vengance!!!
    Thanks for reading my ramblings.
    Cheers,
    Stewart.

I owe thanks to a lot of people. Some gave physical work, others gave me that kick in the **** when I needed it. So here are the names of the guilty:- If your name isn't here you must be innocent!

    Gary Price
    Dennis Sisco (Harms Way)
    Clark (Clark)
    Jerry Foy
    Martyn (Captain Scarlet)
    Dennis from Ionia Rod Shop
    Erik (Hot rod apprentice),

But most of all Lisa, my wife, and Hannah my daughter. Without the love, support and kicks up the **** from these two, I couldn't have posted this today. I love you both.

  11. Absolutely stunning. I remember when you were at Lakeside in your little orange Pop just before you left for your "Round he states tour".
    THE BOY DID GOOD!!!
    Good luck mate

  12. Stewart,

Congrats man, I couldn't be more excited for you. The car looks awesome and I'm really looking forward to seeing it at Cobo. I instantly fell in love with your coupe at Sins last year. One of the favorite pics of my '34 is of it parked next to the Nuffin Special that day. I hope to have the privilage of parking next to it again some time.

I can't wait to hang with you next week.

    Charlie,
Wow, I had forgotten about that! I remember goin to Slyfield, but not Lakeside. Seems a lifetime ago!! And just like yesterday!
That little Pop(Anglia here) set the tone for everything I have built since. Keep it simple, functional, and FUN!
    Cheers,
    Stewart.

    Stewart,
long time, no see mate. I wish that I could be at Detroit to check out your car but I am going to the March Meet that weekend (most likely to watch it rain). Hopefully our paths will cross this summer somewhere in the midwest.
