Looks great, but I want to see more pics of that car! Polished magnesium and a blower! I like it.

I had mags on the rear of this coupe and they were fantastic when just polished but needed attention at least once a month to keep them presentable. They need attention in this picture. But, Man what a blueish, chromy shine when just done!! It was almost worth it.

I love their DOW7 finish, but damn they are pricey. I want to experiment with Alodine and try to get a similar look.

I had a set of American Racing 5 spoke, magnesium wheels. I left the spokes alone to gray and thought it would easier just keeping the lips polished. Wrong!!!
I had to polish every weekend before the shows.

  13. I kept all 4 polished for several years. Hard on the hands, maybe that's why I just had surgery on both mine. I used to use Brasso, works great!

German-made Flitz polish is great stuff that leaves a silicone film and a shine that lasted longer than anything else I tried.

The only thing that ever worked for me in 50 years was Simichrome. 60ç a tube at Scotty's Muffler Shop then, now 8 or 9 bucks at motorcycle shops. Buy the can online.

Damn that looks amazing, until 5 minutes after you polish it. It literally made me loose my breath. It's a shame it's so hard to keep polished.

Yes, wheel wax. American Racing used to sell it. I got rid of the magnesium wheels several years ago, I did a search last year and found a co. in colorado that was still making it under different name. When I said bag the wheels I meant covering the wheel and tire while it's still on the ground, even overnight helps.

Good tip. Years ago Barry Lobeck shared that same tip with me. he said take a plastic garbage bag and put a good cotton towel in the center area of the wheel when not in use. Something about keeping the moisture away from the wheels and the towel will absorb any moisture that is in the bag.

Tom Sullivan from Advance plating in Tenn. says clear coating or clear powder coating won't work. Nothing will keep magnesium from oxidizing and turing dark. Another thing is if there are male cats around they will piss on them and cat piss is the worst thing for your shiny mag wheels.

  23. Ok, I can do that! Don't want the cat doing its business on them either! Cat keeps the mice away;)

    This the stuff?

I'll always remember sitting at the awards ceremony in Cumberland and all of a sudden everybody got up and raced outside to cover their wheels with trash bags you'd think it was hailing or something. It was a simple rain cloud that started all the panic. This was back when if you wanted the look you paid the price. There were no aluminum repros then.

Yes, that's it, but American Racing put their logo on it. Search the internet and you can find rechargeable desicant bags of about one pound. That's what I used and I also heard it from Barry too!! Helluva guy.

I guess the reports of rapid oxidizing make sense.
On the galvanic series magnesium loses to every other metal, even zinc which is used to sacrificially protect steel.

CZ motorcycles came with magnesium hubs from the factory. They had some gold color chemically induced protective finish that held up ok back then, but has turned to dark gray over the decades.

I think you mean "Gibbs Brand" spray, not to be confused with "Joe Gibbs Racing Oil"

I think someone here on the HAMB used to peddle it.

I bought several cases over the years, K
