If you smell something, it's just the paint I'm about to lay down!

A question for all you paint gods and goddesses out there in hot rod land:

I will be painting some graphics down over black epoxy primer in a few days. The paint is a ppg Shopline acrylic urethane (jau code). How long do I wait, after applying the paint to remove the masking tape? I have been told one to two hours- is that right?

    Thanks for your help!

Wait for it to flash, which ought to be less than 30 minutes if you are using to proper reducer / activator. Then be very careful, pulling the tape back against itself. If you let it dry too long, you run the risk of pulling your graphics up with the tape.

Yes, 1 to 2 hours sounds right. Don't leave the tape on overnight, I like to remove tape before the paint has totally set up for sure.

I pull my tape when the paint flashes. Every time I've waited any longer, it's bit me in the ****.

depends on the conditions you are painting under, in my booth solvent based paints flash off about 10 to 20 minutes . Temp, reducers and who is spraying make a big difference.

Amen to that! Nothing better than slivering during tear off and adhesive transfer. 3M 233+ is the way to go

As stated I always pulled off tape after paint flashed and at a sharp angle as to help cut paint and do not go too fast.
